200 years in the future a Martian police unit is dispatched to transport a dangerous prisoner from a mining outpost back to justice. But when the team arrives they find the town deserted and some of the inhabitants possessed by the former inhabitants of the planet.
Set 200 years in the future, intergalactic cop Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) and her team have an assignment of transferring a dangerous criminal named Desolation Williams (Ice Cube) to a prison in the outpost city of Chryse on the planet Mars. But in a turn of events, an adjacent mining team on the Red Planet has unearthed an ancient Martian defense device that unleashes warrior ghosts of the planet's original inhabitants who in turn possess most of the workers. Upon arriving at the outpost, Ballard and her team, including Desolation Williams, must band together to survive the vengeful spirits bent on eradicating all human life on their planet.
When a headstrong police lieutenant arrived alone in a train, her name is Melaine Ballard (Natasha Henstridge). Melaine tells a story to her superiors about herself and her team of officers (Jason Statham, Clea DuVall, Pam Grier, Robert Carradine, Peter Jason & Liam Waite) arrived in a isolated colony to pick up an dangerous thief by the name of James "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube) in the Red Planet-Mars. Mars, day by day is nearly becoming earth. When they arrived, the colony mining workers are missing and they are a few survivors there. When a deadly spirit has possessed the mining workers. Which they are the Spirits of Martains. They take over the dead mining colonist and using them as soldiers. Now Melaine and the other survivors have to fight them to stay alive.
Directed by John Carpenter (The Fog, Starman, Village of the Damned-1995) made an enjoyable action/fantasy/thriller. This film was a Box Office disappointment. Cube and Henstridge are excellent in the film. Statham gives an scene stealing performance as a horny flirting police officer.
DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1) transfer (Also in Pan & Scan). DVD also has an good-Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD has an enjoyable commentary track by the director and actress:Henstridge. DVD also has three featurettes. The film at times is Campy and Ridicious but always entertaining. This is Far from Carpenter's Best or Worse films. But always fun to watch. This is a hard core actioner that the Fans of Carpenter should enjoy. This is a thoroughly entertaining film mix of Action, Sci-Fi and Horror that recalls from Carpenter's earlier films like Assault on Precient 13, The Thing-1982 and They Live. Written by the Director and Larry Sulkis. Panavision. (****/*****).
Hmmm...I think the saddest thing is that we know John Carpenter is capable of better. I mean, this is the man who gave us Big Trouble in Little China, the Thing, In the Mouth of Madness, etc. But Ghosts of Mars...well, it's just a lot of nothing.
Carpenter returns to a premise he's used in many other movies. A group of people besieged by badness. And what mileage has Carpenter gotten out of THAT premise...Whether it's a faceless street gang (Assault on Precinct 13), An alien shape shifter (the Thing), dead pirates (the Fog), an army of homeless possessed by the Devil (Prince of Darkness)or as we're shown here martian miners possessed by red grainy p.o.v shots, the story isn't really so much the siege, as it is the effect on the group of people. And what is a group of people but a group of characters. So, what we need is characterization. Oops. Musta left that out.
It's a shame too, because he has some good actors here. Maybe not GREAT, but certainly capable of the task if given the material. Jason Statham, Ice Cube, Natasha Henstridge (ok, well...maybe not HER, but I don't mind WATCHING her), Clea (Neanderthal Jaw) Duval...give them something to ACT on. I mean direction like"...Mars is big and red, and you're on it...Go with that."
Maybe if we had a cohesive backstory to go on. We know Mars is a matriarchy...because it said so in computer type at the beginning of the movie...is that important? Statham's character, Jericho, who's sole character trait is a desire to sleep with Henstridge says something about there being so few "breeders" left. Huh? Henstridge is a woman trying to make it in a woman's world, dealing with sexual harassment from Pam Grier, a girl just can't get any breaks, huh? All we get are snippets of snippets to go on. In between far from great combat scenes lifted from any episode of Buffy or Dark Angel...actor-fu.
I know complaining about realism in movies like this is futile, but please. We're told theres 200 or so possessed miners...against ten (give or take) police...and most of the fights are in big open areas. Guns notwithstanding, they should be mobbed and taken out. But what we get is the "one at a time, please" school of attack, where one guy will run at the opponent, and the others just kinda dance around in the background...that just makes me mad as a martian miner.
In his last movie, Vampires (ouch), the only female lead worth mentioning spends most of the movie, naked, tied up, and beaten by a Baldwin, with almost no lines to boot. If I got anything from Vampires it was Carpenter is a misogynist. Here, we have a Mars ruled by women...whick I guess is a step up..until we see that (SPOILERS) they're just gonna ignore the whole, Crazy Ghosts killing everyone in their path on the way to the main city story that Natasha Henstridge reports. I guess that's what happens when you let women take charge. Hmm, normally I would end the review there, but I also need to say that the final scene with Cube and Henstridge was so GOSHDARN CORNY....It was like after beating someone senseless with a baseball bat wrapped in bubble wrap, calling them a "doo-doo head" on top of it. Augh, it pains me to remember it. WHY!!!!! Mr. Carpenter...please check with me before you start any more movies. Peace.
It might be nice if Ghosts of Mars had more to offer than snappy repartee and shameless gore, or if it could borrow a little narrative tension from its Alien Chain Saw forebears.
