Greedy sailors capture a giant lizard off the coast of Ireland and sell it to a London circus. Then its mother shows up.
A salvage vessle is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo's mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path.
I marvel at how realistic this movie is. Not so much when it comes to Gorgo (although the scenes of Gorgo in captivity look to me as realistic as anything in "Jurassic Park"), but the acting is just great. Just as in "The Day the Earth Caught Fire", I really believed these characters existed and that the situations they were going through were real. In other words, the movie is played "straight"...and brilliantly so. The suspense is palpable...and, at the end, you really don't know how it will end. But I guarantee you, that the ending is one you will remember for a long time...including the wonderful music composed for this film by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino. I highly recommend this movie...as a precautionary tale of how foolish it can be to think we are the masters of all life on Earth.
Excellent sci fi entry from "Across the Pond". Good production values and interesting performances . Bill Travers in particular does a stirling job as the laconic , money hungry salvage captain who'll stop at nothing to exploit his new found meal ticket - "Gorgo" . Special effects are convincing and an exciting climax rounds off the action in spectacular fashion . Go look for it !
