Book descriptionThis is a collection of stories revolving around the lives of people who grew up living in the е…‰иЏЇе•†е ґ, now one of the larger electronics department stores in Taipei. As children, their parents ran various shops in the department store: keymaking stores, wonton shops, shoe stores, and lived in these shops with their families; the multi-building commercial complex connected by skywalks was their neighborhood.Theres a nostalgic feel to the stories; Ill risk opprobrium by my peers (what peers?) by saying a Taiwanese kind of nostalgia. Its a different kind of nostalgia than the kind in и‡єеЊ—дєє or even 青梅竹馬 -- its not as tragic, not as heavy. Its maybe the kind of nostalgia for a department store in which people once slept at night and was a self-sufficient in a way, which is now a much more commercial and specialized enterprise, selling only electronics.I dont feel comfortable saying much about the writing itself other than if youre a ABC who has had some level of Chinese school wants to read some Chinese books, I think this is a reasonable starting point, dictionary in hand, because the writing fairly colloquial and not very literary in the kind of classical sense, and the setting will be more familiar to contemporary readers (one difficulty I always had with Chinese novels set in any time other than modern times is not only having to look up words but entirely cultural phenomena).Anyway Id like to read this again in the future.
