Master explorer and former US Navy Seal Dirk Pitt and his wisecracking buddy Al Giordino goes on the adventure of a lifetime of seeking out a lost Civil War ironclad battleship known as the "Ship of Death" that protects a secret cargo is lost somewhere in the deserts of West Africa. But while the two cross paths with a beautiful and brilliant U.N. scientist Dr. Eva Rojas who is being hounded by a ruthless dictator. She believes that the hidden treasure may be connected to a larger problem that threatens the world around them. Hunting for a ship that no one else thinks exists, Dirk, Al, and Eva must rely on their wits and their daring heroics to outsmart dangerous warlords, survive the threatening terrain, and get to the bottom of both mysteries.

Hey, I didn't pay for this ridiculous two-hour chunk of Indiana Jones- wannabe nonsense. At least I've got that going for me. Sahara is, I believe, the second and hopefully last attempt to bring Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt to the big screen. If you remember Raise the Titanic!, you'll know that some characters just weren't cut out to have 40 foot-wide faces.
Sahara is so splendidly awful, yet I give thanks for taping it (yes, I tape!) and not buying a ticket. The story is incoherent, the action makes Bond look believable, and the actors Matthew McConaughey, Penelope Cruz, Steve Zahn, and William Macy look eager to get out of town in order to count their cash.
Yet, it was free.
And that sound you hear in the background is my VCR taping over Sahara.
In you are one of those "thinkers", "analyzers" and "what is the political agenda here?" questioners...turn off your brain and enjoy the adventure, true romance and humor of this excellent movie! My husband and I saw this at a sneak preview. We walked out agreeing we would pay to see this movie again! The snappy exchanges between Steve Zahn and Matthew Mc..were fun, mostly believable (if you happen to have several teenage boys living in your house who are always into good fun and winding up with a broken arm, singed cat or soda through the nose between fits of laughter..) and you found yourself looking forward to scenes with their interaction.
We need more "wholesome" movies like this one! Kudos to the actors, director and screenplay writers!
Saddled with more industry/celebrity baggage than a high-class safari voyage, Sahara is a rousing and only occasionally ridiculous adventure yarn.
