Set in the year 1999 during the last days of the old millennium, the movie tells the story of Lenny Nero, an ex-cop who now deals with data-discs containing recorded memories and emotions. One day he receives a disc which contains the memories of a murderer killing a prostitute. Lenny investigates and is pulled deeper and deeper in a whirl of blackmail, murder and rape. Will he survive and solve the case?
In 1999, Los Angeles is racial war zone with the army and LSPD and SWAT officers fighting Afro-American people. The former cop Lenny Nero is a dealer of illegal recording in CDs that gives the memories and sensations of the recorder to the user. He buys the recordings from the supplier Tick; he misses his former mistress Faith, who was a hooker and now is a singer; his best friend is the private eye Max Peltier and the limousine driver Lornette 'Mace' Mason, who has unrequited love for him. Two days before the turn of the century, the black rapper Jeriko One is murdered. The hooker Iris seeks Lenny out but there is an incident and they do not talk to each other. However she drops a recording into Lenny's car while he unsuccessfully tries to meet Faith at a night-club. However her boyfriend Philo Gant does not let them talk. When Lenny learns that Iris was sadistically raped and killed, he gets involved in a sick scheme and discovers dirty hidden secrets.
In the days leading up to the millennium, society is panicking over predictions of the apocalypse, and the death of influential rapper 'Jeriko One' has created tensions between the police and the man on the street. Ex-cop Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) deals in 'playbacks', recordings you can wire into to see, hear and feel an experience as if you were there. When a playback of a murder is sent to Lenny, he teams up with limo driver Lornette "Mace" Mason (Angela Bassett) to unravel a conspiracy in order to protect himself and friends.
Firstly, bear in mind while watching a film set in a year that has already passed you have to suspend some disbelief. Strange Days' vision of the "future" is a familiar one, leather-clad cyberpunks included, and the opening sequence sets the kind of pace you might expect in an action-thriller collaboration from adrenaline junkies like Kathryn Bigelow and writer James Cameron, so the film is an easy watch and you can enjoy it without worrying about the inaccuracies. The pace does slow down at points however, giving some parts a noirish feel similar to Blade Runner. Unfortunately at 140 minutes it did drag on a bit and some irrelevant sequences could have easily been cut out.
The first person long takes in the 'playback' sequences, shot almost like a computer game, are a good feature and reminded me of both Halloween and strangely Being John Malkovich at the same time. As Lenny directs his actors playing out these recorded experiences, it suggest that maybe if technology advances enough these 'playbacks' could be the next step in film after 3D, allowing us to actually become a character. However, like in most James Cameron stories, there is hint of fear of this technology as it is sold in the black-market like a drug, people becoming hooked on these false experiences and using phrases like "wired" and "jacking in".
Ralph Fiennes does a decent job as a cocky rogue with a sensitive side, pining over ex Faith (Juliette Lewis), and his James Woods style American accent is a nice change from his usual characters, but the majority of the performances are fairly mediocre.
Overall despite having several flaws, as any film will, Strange Days is an enjoyable classic 90s thriller and is definitely worth a watch if you don't take it too seriously.
The first time I saw Strange days was at a winter night. (The perfect time to watch this movie). The first thing I noticed about Strange Days was that it had a really cool vision of the future.
And of course a great performance by Juliette Lewis added to that vision. I think of Strange Days as 139 minutes of pure entertainment with a cool story. And it is worth a huge eight.
Due to the combination of violence and sex, approx. 11 seconds were removed from the British Version. No, there were only the two rogue cops, one of whom had killed Jeriko-One in a fit of anger after being goaded by him during a routine traffic stop. He and his partner then went about trying to cover their tracks by attempting to kill Iris who had witnessed it all and destroy the recording of the incident which she gave to Lenny. Max made up the story of the death squad to prevent Lenny from going to the police with the recording and everything he knewJeriko-One was killed by two rogue cops which was witnessed by Iris. Max then killed Iris on behalf of Gant. Gant had been using Iris to spy on Jeriko-One and knew that if his music artists discovered he was secretly recording their every move he would be ruined. Gant also requests that Max kill Faith, however Max is secretly having an affair with Faith so he takes the opportunity to kill Gant instead and attempts to frame Lenny for both his and Iris' murder a5c7b9f00b
