Book descriptionAah, another ABC book! I was happy to find one about Scotland as that is what were studying this month. I am very picky with my ABC books, so here is a brief rundown:1. Letter to word choices - I found the words chosen to go with each letter to be good choices and felt they represented Scotland well. 2. Text - The text comes in two part. One is the rhymes (why do they have to be rhymes?!) which are subpar, but the good thing they have going for them is that at least most of them deliver some useful information in a short, easy to understand format. The second part of the text is found on the sides of the pages with much more detailed information. I actually found this quite nice making this book useful for younger and older children. You can choose what to read based on your listening audience. One thing I found a bit challenging was explaining the letter M for Mary Queen of Scots. In the little rhyme it mentions she lost her head and after reading that aloud to my children (ages 4 & 7) I realized that could be a bit of a scary topic! My 4 year old picked up on it and asked me what happened to her head. sigh3. Illustrations - Theyre okay. They are colorful, appropriate, and done well, but they just dont do much for me. 4. Q, X, & Z - They actually did a great job with these tricky letters, and I was surprised, but very happy with how well they related to Scottish culture. No cop-outs here! But I wont tell you the words because that would give it away! :-)Overall, I think this is a good intruduction to Scottish culture through the alphabet, though I think parents should read through it first to determine what they might need to filter or explain without being caught off guard like I was!B Is for Bagpipes: A Scotland Alphabet by Eve Begley Kiehm original find online kindle book
