When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
The current score on IMDb is too low. This is a fairly good film. It's worth about a 7.5. To see the true IMDb score, click the link for the number of users and look at the bell graph. Eliminate the 1s and 10s, and you'll see that what you're left with is a solid 7.
Saoirse Ronan was perfectly cast for this role as the sensitive, conflicted alien slowly gaining the trust of the human survivor group. Diane Kruger and William Hurt were also good. (Once again, I'm struck how so many Hollywood movies lately have non-American actors playing Americans. What's that all about?)
"The Host" is part of a new genre I would call "sci fi for chicks". If it bothers you to see a "soft" science-fiction film with love-sick young people, noble suicides, impossibly handsome young men, aliens with emotions, etc., don't go see this one. It's the old male v. female dilemma: Should we kill the hated aliens or coax them out and make friends with them?
There was not enough exposition at the start about the horrors of the alien invasion. The writers and producers seem to have assumed that moviegoers would understand why the characters want to "remain human" and why they would refer to a human-hosted alien as "it". Perhaps it was better explained in the book.
The device of Melinda's consciousness remaining fully alert, and Wanda and Melinda actually talking to each other for our benefit, might put some moviegoers off. (I'm not sure. I haven't read the other reviews.) However, once I suspended my disbelief, I was able to go with the flow.
They threw the male viewers a bone: Kruger and Ronan, to start. there were a few car and motorcycle chases (involving futuristic-looking chrome vehicles), and shoot outs. Hey, this is a Hollywood movie, after all.
The theme of humans hosting aliens is not original, but they took the concept in a different direction. The movie is slick and well made, but there were a few clichés and many, many aspects of the story that were glossed over, left unexplained or just not realistic. The survivors here were mostly young Hollywood pretty boys, not a ragged group of tough survivors (like on "Walking Dead", for example.)
Still, I appreciated some of the details of the "good alien" theme, like a society of honest and trustworthy aliens that doesn't need cash to function, or where they will simply give you their car if you need it, or where everyone drives at the speed limit. (God forbid we should have a society like that! Kill them!)
And I liked the part where the other seekers looked at the evil seeker (played by Kruger) and pointed out that she was getting a little too obsessed. After all the aliens saw themselves as the good guys. There are many species that coexist in symbiosis. It's interesting to think that maybe it would do our species good. This is actually a very old theme. There's not much difference between "her body has been taken over by an alien" and "she is filled with the Holy Spirit", or even "she is possessed by a demon".
I imagine if you're a lobotomized teenage girl who doesn't get out much and has a penchant for the blindingly obvious The Host is, like, literally the best movie everrrr.
It's, like so deep and stuff, 'cos it's, like, two people in one body in real love with two boys and, like, she really knows stuff. And I know exactly what she feels and if you can't see that it's, like, totally amazing then, like, whatever! OMG how can you be so insensitive and stuff?
For everyone else it's shallow, patronizing and dull. I found myself looking around the auditorium at the other six attendees in their various states of boredom and counting the ripples on the drapes that are stapled to the walls instead of wallpaper.
Funnily enough, though The Host is clearly intended for the afore mentioned teenage girls, coming as it does from the pen of Stephanie Meyer (she who knocked out the phenomenally successful Twilight saga), there wasn't a single teenager in the room and two thirds of the patrons were men; three accompanying women and then James and I who were there due to the failure of All Things to All Men to run through the projector. Cineworld Bristol cannot be chastised for mechanical failure but I'm going to add them to my Christmas card list purely so I can immediately strike them off it just for making me sit through The Host, the only alternative to our chosen film.
In hindsight, after two alien films in two days, the other ET flick, Dark Skies, wasn't that bad. It did at least have some depth to it and it did at least give a reasonable attempt at plonking 'real' people on the screen.
The Host wanders through a two-dimensional futuristic Earth in which a race of kindly aliens has inhabited the bodies of humans in order to ensure their own survival. Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) is one of a few humans on the run from the aliens though, alas, she, too, falls victim. But fear not; deep within her soul, she has the strength to fight the invader and prove an inhospitable host. Love will conquer all. Cue the odd teenage snog with fellow runaway Jared Howe (Max 'son of Jeremy' Irons) and some other bloke.
There's a real plinky-plonk teenage-lack-of-reason feel to The Host and director Andrew Niccol constantly talks down to us and explains. Every. Single. Point. With. Punctuation. So. That. We. Understand.
It's Big Brother with his patronizing hat on.
And there are further flaws: How are we expected to believe the aliens are a peaceful, loving race when they've forced their way into billions of humans? How did the universally peaceful aliens produce one vindictive bitch from hell, The Seeker (Dianne Kruger)? And, a question you'll find yourself asking after you've seen the aliens' method of transport: How did the first aliens reach Earth?
And what happened to all the fat, ugly humans? Did the aliens mysteriously 'cleanse' our planet of 'normal' folk? The Host passes the time, providing you also have wall furnishings to admire, and passes out of one's mind. Why bother? At least I have an excuse for watching it.

The Host doesn't strive for social allegory, as previous body snatcher flicks have done with the Red Scare, civil rights and Watergate. If anything it's merely a teenage girl's fantasy checklist for prom.
