Still recovering from a heart transplant, a retired FBI profiler returns to service when his own blood analysis offers clues to the identity of a serial killer.
Retired FBI profiler Terry McCaleb (Eastwood), who has recently had a heart transplant, is hired by Graciela Rivers (De Jesus), to investigate the death of her sister, Gloria, who happens to have given McCaleb his heart. On the case, he soon deduces that the killer, who staged the murder to look like a random robbery, may actually be a serial killer Terry was trailing for years in the FBI. Can the elderly and feeble McCaleb, who had intended to spend his retirement living on his boat in the Los Angeles harbor, and who can't drive, and has to nap regularly, muster up the endurance to find the killer?
This has got to be one of the most predictable suspense movies I have ever seen! Just about anyone can guess the identity of the killer within the first half hour. I guessed it even before I started watching the movie. There were many things I did not like about this movie. The killer's trademark was good, but the killer's motive is never really explained. I also did not like the end showdown sequence between the detective and the killer. It was too fast, boring and uninteresting. The killer is killed off too quickly, with no natural moments or no interesting dialogue between the two of them.
The cast is good. Clint Eastwood, Wanda de Jesus, Jeff Daniels, and Paul Rodriguez star in Eastwood's latest thriller BLOOD WORK. A movie that definetely not for everybody. If you like thrillers, then I recommend that you see this. If you are not a fan of suspense movies, or if you don't like to go to the movies, then I would really not tell you to see this. This is also a must-see for Clint Eastwood fans.
This really is a disappointment for major thriller fans as the killer's identity is VERY predictable, so don't see this if you don't like being let down by movies.
BLOOD WORK gets 3/5.
Plodding "thriller" really has no thrills, and all too obvious clues (including the very title itself!!!) take the mysteries out of this one.
Eastwood plays a retired FBI detective, the kind of character that you feel you have seen too many times before in other films including ones that Clint has starred in and/or directed...Jeff Daniels and Anjelica Huston play lackluster, forgettable parts that are shamefully below their usual acting standards.
The direction appears as tired as the star and the rest of the cast...too many blasé, straight-forward camera angles take away what little interest there is to the story. Eastwood needs some tips from Brian DePalma or he needs to review some Hitchcock films in order to improve his style with this genre. The tension necessary for a film like this to work is completely missing.
There's a certain pleasure in seeing a thriller that's almost a relic of a bygone era. There's nothing flashy about Blood Work, no in-your-face nihilism, no hot young actors you'd know from the WB network if you ever watched it.
