Convinced that Tidus is still alive, Yuna embarks on a quest to find him.
For 1000 years, the world of Spira was held in the grip of terror as the great monster Sin punished its Citizens for using the forbidden machina (machines) in the great machina wars. To combat Sin, powerful summoners would make a pilgrimage to Zanarkand, the ruins of what was once the greatest city in Spira. Able to call and control the devastating manifestations of the Fayth, holy souls imprisoned in statues by ancient Yevon rites, aeon's, into battle. These summoners would sacrifice their lives and the life of a chosen guardian of the summoner to defeat Sin for a temporary period of time called "The Calm". Unfortunately, The Calm would end and Sin would eventually return, forcing a new summoner and his or her guardian to forfeit their lives to bring peace to Spira once again. This cycle of life and death continued in Spira for untold generations, until one summoner stood against the teachings of Yevon and sought a new mean by which to defeat Sin -- permanently. That summoner's name was Yuna and along with her guardians, she went against the order of Yevon and fought enemies on all sides. In a last ditch effort, Yuna and her guardians took on Sin and defeated it forever bringing forth a time which would be henceforth referred to as the "Eternal Calm". Although peace would finally last forever, Yuna was forced to say goodbye to someone whom she cared for very much. The young man named Tidus whom had been a dream of the Fayth, summoned by the great summoned by the great summoner, he who clads the aeon's into the unholy armor called Sin, Yu Yevon. When the Fayth were defeated during the attack on Sin, their dream faded, and with it, Tidus. Yuna thought the love of her life had vanished alongside the last remaining traces of Sin. But two years later, Yuna's cousin Rikku appeared in her hometown, Besaid Village and delivered a sphere found by Kimahri, Yuna's former guardian. This sphere contained images of a young man who resembled Tidus so closely that Yuna was compelled to leave Besaid and begin a new search for more spheres that might to lead her closer to the truth. This is Yuna's story.
Like Final Fantasy VIII, the focus of Final Fantasy X-2 isn't on the worldsaving-- though worldsaving does, of course, appear. Instead, it's on the characterizations of the protagonists and her allies, and it does an amazing job of it. I clocked in at 77 hours, gaining the Normal Ending; a replay is definitely in order and I'm glad they've included New Game Plus in order to make it easier to get the story again.
X-2 is a game where you definitely have to explore and poke around everywhere in order to squeeze every bit possible from the story; if you only follow the big clue hammer plot points, you will indeed only get the barest sketchings of a story and maybe even finish it in 15 hours. However, I feel that the Square-Enix team has used the previously created world of Spira very well, taking advantage of players' familiarity and interest in the world to weave engrossing stories about not just the protagonists but many of the characters encountered in the previous game.
It's not only a game where you have to explore in order to find more story, it's a game where you can't see and get everything on a single playthrough. It's also a game where you repeatedly run across signs that Yuna and company aren't the only adventurers and explorers in Spira.
I really enjoyed the development of the inhabitants of Spira-- what retired summoners do, the fact that the fiends of Spira encourage even grandmothers to be competent-- the game starts out extremely easy, although it does get harder later, and this is clearly meant to reflect not only Yuna's experience in Final Fantasy X but also the world's experience with wandering monsters.
Finally, the music and voice acting in FFX-2 is just fantastic. Yes, the music is peppy and jazzy. It's also quietly desolate in places, and some of the repeated themes are just beautiful. As for the voice acting-- Yuna, Rikku and Paine's voice actresses all deserve medals, as do several of the other more minor characters. They bring a richness, subtlety and depth to the story that older games could only reach for. Yuna's voice actress in particular once again does a stellar job, conveying a nervous, self-conscious, but determined Yuna who can't help wanting to save people but wants to learn to have fun, dammit. And who misses her boy a lot, underneath it all.
when i first played this game it was OK i liked it it was fun, but after a couple of days when i completed it i got bored so i went out and brought the strategy guide to find there's more endings than just the one. i immediately played on it determined to get 100% i worked for hours first given the Sphere to the youth league and doing everything i managed to complete it with 90 odd percent to see a really good ending in Besaid, but determined to get the to get the perfect ending i went back on it this time handing the sphere to New yevon, i finally got 100% has the credits rolled up i was sweating with joy and then a scene of Zanerkand came on and some extra Dialog has soon has that scene finished i was sitting patiently convinced there was another ending but they wern't i was mortified after all my hard work i got to see a boring pointless part of the game my point his for you ones who haven't got 100%..........DON'T BOTHER
to get this you have to meet Maechen in Guadosalam in Chapter 3 and at the end of Chapter 3 when Yuna is alone in the Farplane, a5c7b9f00b
