After being tracked down by Harry Flynn, Nathan Drake goes on a quest for Marco Polo' lost fleet. However when things take an unexpected turn for the worst, Drake must rely on those closest to him in order to find the Cintomani Stone.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is one of the best games that I have ever played on any console.
You follow Nathan Drake on an even bigger adventure then the last as you follow the trail of Marco Polo to the legendary city of Shambhala(Shangri-La). You meet up with old and new friends in order to find the ancient city and claim the Cintamani Stone which is fabled to bestow wealth and power beyond any comprehension. But Drake is not the only one searching for the stone. He must compete with a vicious war criminal and his army of mercenaries across the mountains of Tibet in a deadly race to find Shambhala first. This adventure will push Drake to his limits and make him question what is real and what is mythology.
Everything from the first Uncharted has been improved in this game. Climbing is easier to master, the enemies are somewhat easier to kill, fighting is faster and more fun to use, the graphics look even more beautiful then before and if I really went into everything about what makes this game so great it would take awhile. There are still puzzles to be solved but they are much larger in scale and require a lot more thinking to solve. The story is no longer restricted to just one island. You'll now find yourself in the jungle, on the streets of a city, on a speeding train and even in the mountains(which harbor the most realistic snow in any video game). If you have a Play Station 3, this game is definitely worth buying. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is an experience you won't soon forget.
This is my first foray into the Uncharted series. The plot is harmless enough; kind of on the boring side. Something about Marco Polo and Shambala and what not. Nathan Drake and his supporting cast are pretty likable, the woman I would recognize as one of the new gears in Gears of War 3 does a fine job here as femme fatale Chloe. The main baddie is your typical Russian goon, a man that would make Ivan Drago proud. Alongside him in the villainy I noticed was the man who played Alistair of Dragon Age fame, playing a similar character here yet with a darker edge. The game is fun, and at times gorgeous(except when it freezes!). I found the puzzles to be frustrating and tedious at best, thought they are over very soon. Most of the firefights actually get rather repetitive, I was just waiting for the next eye-pleasing climbing episode as I chugged along in the game. Speaking of gears of war, this game basically plays like a fluid version of marcus n' friends' romp yet with an odd pg-13 no gore angle that makes kills a lot less satisfying beyond the awesome melee/stealth kills. Drake is really a killing machine by the time all is said and done. The set pieces are really a sight to behold, highlights being a car chase involving the monkey-like Drake having to jump from car to car and the falling train moment depicted on the cover that you thankfully have to experience twice. Uncharted is a world were everyone has the climbing abilities of a lemur and will be shunned if they display any less. Not quite Raiders of the Lost Ark, yet entertaining nonetheless, Uncharted 2 is a game one should run through at least once; the multiplayer is pretty robust and fun in itself as well I might add.
Istanbul, Borneo and Nepal. A recurring motif in the Uncharted series is the idea that magic and science are merely different ways in which an individual might attempt to explain the world. One could presume, as with the virus in Drake's Fortune, that the Tree of Life was in some sense magical. We know of countless plants with remarkable pharmaceutical properties, though, and there are many more yet to be discovered. The Tree of Life found in Shambhala, perhaps, was one such example.
Unlike Nate, who initially believed he was searching for a giant emerald (the Cintamani Stone), Lazarevic (and Schafer) knew of legends that related the incredible regenerative power of the tree's sap. The antagonist sought the Tree of Life not for monetary reward, nor even glory, but the promise of immortality. The Guardians of Shambhala were probably once the population who created an isolated utopia, initially imbibing the young Tree of Life's narcotic, life-enhancing sap in small doses. As the tree grew larger, they became dependent on consuming greater quantities, and could no longer leave; they were stronger, effectively immortal, but utterly addicted to its vascular outpourings.
Based on the safe presumption that discontinuing use of the sap would be deadly, this symbiotic relationship enabled the tree to grow unchecked while protected from potential threats. The Guardians were essentially bound in servitude, compelled to defend the origin of the drug that sustained them. Isolated from outside civilisation, the primitive Guardians dressed in terrifying costumes to deter those who might have discovered Shambhala (leading, it is implied, to the myth of the Yeti), and killed those who persisted. Few players realised that every piece of plant life seen in Shambhala is in fact connected to the Tree of Life. It grew rampant with great age, its roots entwined with every part of the city. When Nate creates a chain-reaction of explosions in the confrontation with Lazarevic at the climax of Among Thieves, the tree is killed; no longer anchored to the main trunk and roots, the surrounding landscape collapses. a5c7b9f00b
