Rose Cooper is an uptight and by-the-book cop whose name has become synonymous with screw-ups. She's given a chance to redeem herself one day when she is assigned to protect a federal witness, Daniella Riva, the vivacious and outgoing widow of a drug boss. As the two polar opposites race through Texas, they find themselves pursued by everyone from crooked cops to murderous gunmen. However, their greatest obstacle to making this out alive may be themselves as they learn that Cooper has now been considered a fugitive fleeing with Daniella.
An uptight and by-the-book cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.
The movie wasn't good. It had a few laughs, but the action scenes and laughs weren't timed well and it had too many bad guys and excuses for random action. It didn't seemed well written or choreographed.
Teaming up Witherspoon and Vergara might have seemed like a gimmick at first, but it really made a lot of sense since they're both skilled comediennes and can elicit a good laugh because of their abilities. Vergara knows how to use her physical attributes to manipulate those who must be distracted in order to have her character survive, and she can certainly command the audience with her winning personality. Witherspoon has been playing "serious" for a while, but she was amazing in her "Blonde" movies and her range goes from the absurd to black comedy ("Election" comes to mind).
It's a formula movie that has a cop and her charge avoiding all kinds of danger, including Mexican cartel, cops, and corrupt cops. There's hilarious scene after hilarious scene, as we see pieces of fingers, bathroom shoot outs, and more. They even manage to cause plenty of trouble in a quinceanera party without being noticed by the guests.
Yes, there are plenty of cheap laughs, and some might find the jokes sexist; however, one can look back at the years of golden comedy to see that they weren't exactly aiming for high comedy. What is important here is the execution, and all the actors here play it for fun, giving us many thrills along the way.
It would be a lot easier to give the film a soft pass if it wasn't so aggressively lazy.
