Sports news covers school problems
I fail to understand all the excitement over the recent sporting successes associated with Philemon Wright. Anything that encourages the belief that this trash bin for unwanted waifs might actually give the young of our community an
education is a disaster.
I have never attended Philemon Wright, but I have had the misery of employing the great unwashed of its Alumni and the experience of having to cope with the associated roving herd of parole officers/psychiatrists/welfare officials/rehab technicians.
The simple sad fact is that Philemon Wright is a school for scandal where the dross of humanity is trained in the liberal arts of bullying, beating and betting for a future life out dealing on the streets of the slums. No more than a mindless machine it would seem, it cranks out truncheon fodder for the police like sausages. Kids would clearly learn more being locked in a dark cupboard under the stairs for 5 years with nothing to read but a dog-eared copy of an STO timetable from 1967.
Any good publicity merely serves to allow it to pull in a few extra victims, so, to paraphrase the past Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman, “Come of friendly bombs and fall on Philemon Wright."
