An F.B.I. Agent goes undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers.
A string of systematic bank robberies by a daring gang of thieves who name themselves The Ex-Presidents, terrorize sun-drenched southern California, as the rubber-masked criminals act fast without leaving a trace, right under the noses of the police. Under those circumstances, the clean-cut and inexperienced F.B.I. Agent, Johnny Utah, after following up on a lead, goes undercover to infiltrate the local surfing community to extract information from his surf tutor, Tyler. Before long, as Johnny gets into the group, he will befriend Bodhi, the mystic and enigmatic surf leader, who will teach him not only how to catch the perfect wave, but also how to find a new meaning in life. Inevitably, Johnny walks a thin line. How far will he go without blowing his cover?
Like many other people, I first heard of Point Break in "Hot Fuzz" - an all-time favourite of mine - but never got round to watching it for numerous reasons. I saw it was available on BBC iPlayer as it had been aired recently, so I thought - why the hell not?
I'm so pleased I did.
If you're fond of action films like Die Hard, you're going to love this. Abandoning the stereotypical urban setting for such films, and moving out to the coast, it provides a unique mashup combining my stereotypical view of adrenaline-fixed surfers with a killer plot.
Although I saw the events that happen after the tables turn about an hour in coming a mile off (after seeing enough detective dramas on ITV3, you get to know how a writer's mind works) the emotional attachment you have with the characters provides you with a huge moral dilemma. You can see the 'bad' guys are actually alright people when they're off-duty - yet you know what they do on-duty is morally wrong on every level. The ending plays on this massively, and is the only way to satisfy both sides of the moral argument, for better or for worse.
Sure, a few sequences aren't in any way realistic (like the jump about 10 mins from the end) but if you suspend belief for a moment, and accept this film for what it is rather than a serious crime drama, you'll agree that this is one hell of a film.

To me "Point Break" was one of the best action/thrillers I've seen in a long time. I liked every moment Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze were on screen together. It seemed like they already knew each other. And I also liked the storyline. It's about an FBI Agent who goes undercover to find out if a group of surfers are bank robbers that do crimes dressed like four ex-presidents. Also, there was good surfing and skydiving scenes. The people who made this movie really knew what they were doing. So, on a star scale of 1 to 4. I give this movie **** stars.
A hare-brained wild ride through big surf and bad vibes, Point Break acts like a huge, nasty wave, picking up viewers for a few major thrills but ultimately grinding them into the sand via overkill and absurdity.
Tapping the Source (1984), a novel by Kem Nunn, provided the inspiration for Point Break. It's called "Hundreds of Tears" by Sheryl Crow. Yes. There's likely no way a surfer as experienced as Bodhi could survive it. Bodhi even says earlier in the film when he describes the storm at Bell's Beach and how big the waves will be that surfing the break will be the "ultimate price".
