July 10, 2017. To help doctors provide their patients with the highest quality care, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) developed a new guideline on how to use biomarkers to guide the treatment of early-stage breast cancer. This guide for patients is based on ASCO's most recent recommendations.

To update the ASCO guideline for antiemetics in oncology. Methods The first ASCO guideline for antiemetics was published in 1999, with updates in 2006, 2011, and 2015. Upper-body irradiation and half-body irradiation have been removed from the 2017 guideline, as they are variably defined and now seldom used.
ASCO develops and publishes clinical practice guidelines, provisional clinical opinions (PCOs), and guideline endorsements, providing evidence-based recommendations to serve as a guide for doctors and outline appropriate methods of treatment and care. The guidelines can also address specific clinical situations
The guideline update reflects changes in evidence since the previous guideline. Nine RCTs, one quasiexperimental trial, and five secondary analyses from RCTs in the 2012 PCO on providing palliative care services to patients with cancer and/or their caregivers, including family caregivers, were found to inform the update.
