At a Hong Kong shopping center, Jackie Chan's intuition warns him. He saves a robbery's loot and gets on TV, ends up in Istanbul via South Korea and accidentally becomes a spy. Fortunately, he knows Kong Fu.
Internationally-acclaimed star Jackie Chan is Bei, a less-than-successful exercise equipment salesman who yearns for excitement in his life. One day, Bei follows his instincts and trails two-suspicious-looking men into action and foils their plans. The resulting publicity from Bei's heroism brings him to the attention of a private investigator who informs him that he is actually the long-lost son of a wealthy businessman. Hoping to reunite with his true family, Bei travels to Korea where his father lies dying. Bei finds, to his astonishment, that both his parents lived the life he has longed for himself: they were both professional spies. Drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse where no one can be trusted, Bei travels to Turkey, where soon it's up to him to track down a new, highly addictive narcotic before it ends up in the hands of evil drug lords.
This review is for the Hong Kong version, and NOT the cut American one.
I saw this a few years ago, and remembered enjoying it, but it was the Dimension version. I love Jackie Chan, so I felt like revisiting it. This is basically a quickie project for Jackie Chan. Too often does this movie alternate between heavy drama, and comedy, failing to find the proper medium like other successful Jackie Chan films. It starts off rather decently. We get one of Jackie's patented breathtaking stunts involving Jackie being on a huge crane as it collides with a tall building, which was pretty impressive. Then it bogs down into major tedium with a convoluted plot that failed to engage my interest. Another problem with Accidental Spy is, other than Jackie Chan, the characters are downright uninteresting. Even Jackie Chan isn't as interesting as he usually is. He does have a couple of great stunts, as I mentioned somewhat up above in the review, but this is not up to his usual standards. He seems unsure how to take on this diverse role, not that I blame him. It's a bit of a messy film. The finale pours on the action, and it revitalized my interest a little bit. Jackie takes on a truck to chase after the baddies, and it was actually pretty exciting, with a memorable stunt at the very end. But it was too little, too late for me
Note: Keep the movie on after the end to see Jackie's stunt outtakes. They are always amusing to watch
Bottom line: This was rather mundane for me. I must have been really naive to enjoy this movie originally, considering it was the U.S Dimension version! This film is too convoluted and dull for its own good, with action here and there. Worth a watch once for big Jackie Chan fans, but that's about it. It's nothing special
5/10
I just saw it last night, and after reading about the "serious tone" of the film I was surprised to see what looked like the usual "happy-go-lucky" sort of stuff we'd expect....silly robbers, some mugging, Jackie running naked through the streets of Turkey. But about halfway through things took a turn toward darkness. I liked this...not everything needs to be sugar-coated, and we get to see Jackie act, with some good supporting players. There's a pretty vicious plot twist or two, which I felt made things even more interesting, and though I'd read about the film, it still kept my attention. On the obvious side there's some really awesome stuntwork, some of the coolest things I've seen done, and the fighting, though short is as usual fun to watch. My only complaint is that I felt things wrapped up waaaay to quickly with the major villains, and though the ending was neat, I was sort of distracted by this. All in all though, good story, good acting, and the seriousness was much appreciated...8/10
The International Version of this Jackie Chan movie is severely shorter than the Hong Kong Version. This International Version is one of several released versions that can be fairly called artistic failures, because of poor choice of cuts and sometimes very rough ones, even in good scenes. More than that, dialog is often distorted, and sometimes it is overshadowed by simultaneous sounds that are wrong for the moment.
An even longer cut than the Hong Kong Version is available, the so-called Malaysian Extended Version a5c7b9f00b
