Ford "Mr. Rock n' Roll Detective" Fairlane is experiencing problems, and it's not with the opposite sex. One of them is that all the rock stars pay him with drum sticks, koala bears, food processors and bicycle shorts. Another one of them is that all his employers that want him to find a girl named Zuzu Petals get killed. Why didn't he become a fisherman's detective instead? A must-see for Andrew Dice Clay fans.
A vulgar private detective is hired to find a missing groupie and is drawn into a mystery involving a series of murders tied to the music industry.
In this age of political correctness and gender inclusive language, let me tell you, from the point of view of an artist' it is sure refreshing to see a movie that panders to no special interest group, that didn't tone down it's language because some ethnic minority complained (as in Aladdin), and that pulls no punches. You might also be surprised to find out that this movie was made in 1990's, and not 1960's. Stand up comic Andrew Dice Clay first made his name as a rude, crude and generally unsociable comedian whose routine took
shots at women, minorities and gays with equal abandon and a general lack of good taste. It got to the point where some female performers would refuse to even appear on the same show as Clay (such as happened on Saturday Night Live), because they felt his act was offensive. Some would say that this movie is offensive, as well. Me, I think it's hilarious, well made, and well crafted. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane tells the story of Fairlane, a self-styled `Rock and Roll Detective' who works the seamier side of L.A., namely the music industry. The character is rude and crude, as he says `Some people play hard to get, me, I play hard to want.' It is obvious that the role was written with Clay in mind, for in many ways, it is his stage persona that we are seeing on screen. Anyway, Fairlane gets mixed up in a mystery of drugs, rock and roll, murder, and adultery, in other words, nothing new to him. It is up to the `Rock and Roll Superhero' to solve the case before Police Lt. Amos tramps through all of the good clues and snatches the garland away from Fairlane. This movie, when released to theatres, was generally reviled by everyone who saw it, particularly the critics. In their political correctness, they identified the movie has being peppered with crude remarks, off colour language, and some very politically incorrect language. Thus, they decided that everyone should be offended by it, and panned it in general. Well, as is usual with the mainstream critics, they were right, but their conclusions were all wrong. Sure, the movie is crude and peppered with foul language, but then again, so is Glengarry Glen Ross, and the critics didn't pan it. Yes, the Fairlane character is a lout, but he admits it, and actually manages to change by the end of the flick. But still, when you watch the movie, the Fairlane character is very compelling to watch, and very funny. Get past the political correctness issue and simply enjoy the movie, the performances, the direction, and the music. To start, the music here is great - hell, the movie is set in the world of the music industry, and for the most part, it's good music. The score was produced by Yello, and it's just fine. Sit back and enjoy the sound of the film. On to the direction. Renny Harlin broke onto the scene with this film, and he shows a lot of panache in his direction. Sure, some of the scenes are simple action set-pieces, and he has the annoying habit of reverting to slomo during the shootouts, but overall, this is a good effort, better, I think, than his later work (such as Cliffhanger) - and I know that a lot of what you see here led directly into Die Hard 2: Die Harder. Of the performances on screen, Andrew Dice Clay is a natural. It helps, too, that he is mostly acting in the persona of his stand-up routine, but still, there is something undeniably compelling about his performance that is very difficult to define. Opposite Clay as the evil music company owner is Wayne Newton, who gives a wonderfully sleazy performance as Julian Grendel `Don't play games with me, Mr. Fairlane.' Also on display is Priscilla Presley, who plays Grendel's ex-wife with a certain aloof flair that is really wonderful. On Ford's side is his trusty assistant Jazz, played winningly by Lauren Holly, who makes quite a splash in her film debut. We also get good performances in small roles from Morris Day, and Ed O'Neill. O'Neill plays Lt. Amos with a stolidness that is engaging and entertaining. `I call you Spam because that's what you are.' But over-the-top acting kudos have to go to Robert Englund, who plays the hitman Smiley, and is simply crazed, loony, and wonderful, even with the ludicrous Cockney accent (which, in a weird way, adds to his charm). So who cares if the movie is politically incorrect? We need the film medium to express itself in every way, and not to knuckle under to the pressure from special interest groups. Besides, it's in the American Constitution (and echoed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms) that the people have freedom of expression, so if you don't like the message, then don't watch. However, I recommend you do watch this one.
"The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" was supposed to be raunchy stand-up comic Andrew Dice Clay's launch pad into movie stardom, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your feelings about "Dice") by the time it was released his fifteen minutes of fame was about up, and the film crashed and burned. I will admit that I have never been a big "Dice-Man" fan, I've only ever been able to tolerate his stand-up routines in small doses, but oddly enough, I have always enjoyed this movie. It's big, loud, dumb, profane, and morally reprehensible -- so hey, what's not to like? Clay basically plays himself as the foul mouthed title character (leather jacket, cowboy boots, cigarettes and all), a Los Angeles based private detective who specializes in cases involving the music industry. As the movie opens a rock star by the name of "Johnny Black" (played by Vince Neil of Motley Crue) mysteriously dies onstage. In what he thinks is an unrelated case, Fairlane is hired by a local shock rock DJ (played by Gilbert Gottfried, channeling Howard Stern here) to locate a missing groupie named "Zuzu Petals," who as it turns out, knows more about the death of the rock singer than even she realizes. With his bubble-brained charge in tow, Fairlane spends the rest of the movie avoiding gunshots, explosions and a maniacal Australian hit man (played by Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund of all people, with a horrible Aussie accent) before he stumbles upon a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top of the music industry. "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" may not be a great movie, but it is a fun one. Some of Dice's one-liners are endlessly quotable ("Talking to Zuzu was like masturbating with a cheese grater - mildly entertaining but mostly painful." "So many a-holes, so few bullets!" "You're about ten seconds away from the most embarrassing moment of your life!"), and director Renny Harlin keeps the pace light and moving fast enough that you don't' have time to stop and think how ridiculous the whole thing is. Dice may not be much of an actor, but he gets fine support from Wayne Newton (!), Priscilla Presley, Lauren Holly, Ed O'Neill Jr., and a host of other background characters.
"Ford Fairlane" could become a cult classic if only enough people give it a chance. Even if you're not a fan of the "Dice-Man," this flick is a fast, funny way to kill 90 minutes. Do it for the Koala Bear.
The first starring vehicle for shock comic Andrew Dice Clay, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, turns out to be the kind of detective spoof worn out 30 years ago by Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis, though refitted with salty language, graphic violence and an attitude toward women that makes the Marquis de Sade look like Phil Donahue.
