Fu Sing Wu Chi is the blind teacher of the two Ching assassins, Chow Lung and Chow Fu, killed by the One Armed Boxer a few years earlier. He also happens to be a master of the most deadly of all weapons, the flying guillotine. When Fu receives word of their death he immediately heads off to find Liu. Unfortunately, in the process he kills any one armed man in he comes in contact with. Aiding him in his search are a Thai boxer and an Indian fakir, who has the power of extending his arms. Also complicating matters is a Japanese karate expert, who has designs on the daughter of a martial arts teacher who also was killed by the vengeful Fu.
After his students are killed by the One Armed Boxer, a vengeful and blind Kung Fu expert travels to a village where a martial arts contest is being held and vows to behead every one armed man he comes across.
I had heard good things about this movie, but words can't really do it justice. This is pure, raw, un-cut 'porn fu', people; it is completely uncompromising and internally consistent in its world-view and aesthetics. It's old school kung fu film making, pure and simple, with absolutely no concession to mainstream expectations or conventions, and you have to admire its director and producers for their dedication to their vision.
I think the most incisive thing you can say about MOFG is that once you've seen it, you will always remember it, no matter how many kung fu or sword play movies you've seen before or see after-wards. Although it incorporates almost all the standard motifs and story ideas from traditional Hong Kong films, the filmmakers made dozens of choices, both major and minor, that implement these old-time plot devices and visual clichés with a vehemence like few films you've ever seen. From the sheer viciousness and cruelty of the featured weapon ( the Flying Guillotine, which yanks off heads at the neck), to the implacable ruthlessness and seeming unstoppability of the Master (who is a genuinely unsettling and scary guy) to the carefree brutality of the tournament duels, to the ear-splitting Foley and sound effects to the offbeat and ruthless strategies and tactics of the one-armed boxer to kill the killers who are after him...man, you will be talking about this movie to anyone who will listen for years after you see it.
Any fan of Hong Kong film making ought to see this film at least once.
As someone once said, this is probably the greatest martial arts film of the period between the death of Bruce Lee and the emergence of Jackie Chan. The fight scenes are well choreographed and make you part of the action, especially the scenes during the tournament. Also, it contains some of the greatest visual effects ever used in a kung fu film and you have a great story which is only enhanced by the action. Plus there are is a good touch of humor included in this film, which helps to ease the tension. If you should see this gem, you are in for one helluva ride. Also, I have not seen any of the other "One Armed Boxer" films, but if this is any example, the rest are probably as good.
The low-budget "Master" lacks the polish and romance that made "Crouching Tiger" so popular. But for old-fashioned raw energy, it's tough to beat.
