An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
The reincarnation of a soul travels through time beginning with the diary of a potential slave-owner voyaging across the Pacific in 1849, then a talented composer writing letters to his lover in the Britain's 1930s, followed by a reporter investigating a corrupt case about a US nuclear power-plant in the 1970s, succeeded by a publisher's comical entrapment in a nursing home in 2012, followed by a clone's thrilling escape and rebellion in 2144's Korea, and finally a tribesman fighting cannibals in Hawaii in a post-apocalyptic world past 2300. Each story challenges the corrupt norms of the time, changing the course of history, and shaping the future through acts of kindness, big and small.
If you are about to go watch this movie because you read on a magazine that this movie is 4 stars out of 4, and saw that the IMDb reviews say this movie is epic... wow... IMDb has never disappointed me with the ratings, but this movie honestly is so disconnected and tries too hard to be clever. It is really, really, really long. And this is coming from a person that loves good movies that are long because I would want them to never end. (e.g. - The Godfather, LOTR trilogy) It's not even the acting that is bad, the core of this film sucks. The plot is so tough to follow and it just isn't entertaining. Please, save your money, and do not see this film, it is all hype. I do not know why some reviewers thought it was so amazing. It is just a bad film, and I cannot believe the makers of the matrix trilogy would come out with this and expect it to be entertaining. huge. huge disappointment. If you loved the book or something and need to see it, then sure, who knows, you might like it, but you have been warned my friend. It's not entertaining and the overall message was not even that impactful even by the end of the film.
I seriously thought this looked too ambitious and would just end up pretentious and dumb.
If anything, it ended up being a movie made up of separate parts that flowed so well together that you felt it more than understood it. Often, that is a point of weakness in my opinion (Babel, anybody?). In this case, though, good directing, acting and editing made the whole thing work.
As with most people, some parts fell flat, but it was like watching a massive episode of "Lost", where you have some favorite characters, some not so favorite, but it all works together. If you're looking for a film that wraps up everything in a really obvious but cool way, watch "Fish Story". If you'd rather have some interpretation left to interconnecting worlds your entertainment, watch "Cloud Atlas".
Not quite soaring into the heavens, but not exactly crash-landing either, Cloud Atlas is an impressively mounted, emotionally stilted adaptation of British author David Mitchell's bestselling novel.
Cloud Atlas is based on the 2004 multi-award winning novel by David Mitchell. It consists of six loosely interconnected stories: an 1850 diary of an ocean voyage across the Pacific; letters from a composer to his friend; a thriller about a murder at a nuclear power plant; a farce about a publisher in a nursing home; a rebellious clone in futuristic Korea; and the tale of a tribe living in post-apocalyptic Hawaii, far in the future. The author himself has indicated that the film will take the loose connections of the novel and expand them into the major theme of the film: "The reincarnation motif in the book is just a hinted-at linking device, but the script gives it centre stage to link the six worlds with characters, causes and effects." The film will also feature all the principal actors playing multiple roles of different ages, sexes and races. "A novel can't do multi-role acting: a film can," says Mitchell. "The directors are playing to the strengths of their medium, just like I try to." The novel was shortlisted for the 2004 Booker Prize, Nebula Award, Arthur C. Clarke Award, among many others. There are three pieces: (1) "Prelude: The Atlas March" by Tom Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek (from the film's soundtrack); (2) "Sonera" by Thomas Bergersen; and (3) "Outro" by M83. In chronological order:
"The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing" - Wachowskis
"Letters from Zedelghem" - Tykwer
"Half Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery" - Tykwer
"The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish" - Tykwer
"An Orison of Sonmi-451" - Wachowskis
"Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After" - Wachowskis a5c7b9f00b
