Book descriptionSo Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet is a comic strip. Possibly was. I dont know if its still running. This particular book is copyright 2000, and Goodreads doesnt have a parenthetical (Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet #1) next to the title, which doesnt bode well. There are no dates on the individual strips in the book, but, given the general layout of the book, and the way the continuity seems to jump around, Im guessing that these strips are not printed in the order in which they originally appeared. So Helen seems to be the head of IT at a small tech company. Because shes the only one who can keep all the electronics working, she unofficially runs the company. Her immediate supervisor, the marketing department, the CEO, everyone defers to her in the end. Shes highly tech savvy, but not good with interpersonal relationships. Semi-autistic tech types are a fairly common character type these days, but not so much in 2000. Theres a fair amount of topical humor--Bill Gates imagined as Austin Powers in a dream sequence, for instance--that hasnt dated well. Many of the jokes revolve around Helens legendary hacking skills. She gets a phone call from someone claiming to be a computer pirate:Helen: Why are you calling me?Pirate: Cause Im releasing a killer virus, and I dont want your computers to crash!Helen: Mine? Crash? HA HA HA ...Pirate: All right. I dont want them to be somewhat annoyed. The strip isnt always laugh out loud funny, but it has its charms. Zales artwork is an acquired taste. He favors sketchy rather than clean lines, and the effect is something like stretching out a Feiffer strip to a 16:9 aspect ratio. He has a real gift for delineating many different faces with just a few lines, and a knack for dialogue that is just right.One thing that would have been nice to have would have been a guide to the various characters. This strip has a fairly sizeable cast, and its not always clear who people are in relation to Helen at first. Theres nothing that doesnt become clear as the book progresses; it just would have been nice to have the info earlier. Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet isnt the greatest strip ever or anything like that, but it is quirky and fun and well worth acquainting yourself with if you have any love for tech type humor.Techies Unite!: Featuring Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet by Peter Zale txt online look spanish ios
