This is a story about an idealistic and patriotic army officer, who is shocked to see that the country he has fought for is going to the dogs. He sees politicians and thugs as worse than any outside enemy, because they are eating away at his beloved country. When one of his soldiers (crippled in action), is brutally killed by street thugs, and the police show apathy, he takes it upon himself to curb the situation. however, this is not an action thriller like 'Rambo', etc. This is a mature, thought-provoking examination of society and the individual.
Prahaar is the story of Major Chavan, a tough and stern soldier, trained to destroy the enemy. He can see the enemy on our borders but is unaware of the invisible enemy within ourselves. When one of Major's Commandos - Peter D'Souza is killed, he is shown the harsh reality revolving around us, the enemy is within ourselves. The battlefield changes and Major Chavan makes his final attack on the enemy within this crumbling society.
the first half of this film is quite strange, with over an hour of soldiers training and inexplicably screaming out "COMMANDO!!!" while training...? i'm not sure what the point of that was, have you ever had a dentist scream out "DENTIST!!!" right before looking into your mouth...? anyway, just as the movie seems like an extended commercial for the Indian military, a shocking twist occurs, allowing for a great deal of social criticism.
the second half is excellent, dealing with many social issues, such as corruption, crime, treatment of women and drug use. many interesting issues are discussed, without any kind of lecturing or judgement being passed, which is quite refreshing for mainstream Indian cinema, which usually uses every opportunity to crush independent thought and encourage blind devotion to tradition... topping it off is an incredibly violent action sequence in which nana beats down a bunch of baddies....
however, the most shocking part is the last sequence, which consists of hundreds of naked young boys running around (no joke)...? this scene seems to go on forever and really has no explanation or purpose. i still can't understand what the point of this sequence was and why it was included, what do naked little boys have to do with anything and why would anyone want to end a movie like this...??
Granted my copy of the VCD print was horrible - but the movie in itself it phenomenal. The credible footage of commando training is awesome - and seeing Nana himself do some of the scenes seems unbelievable.
The final 15 minutes of the movie are to die for. His dialogue delivery is superb - as one might come to expect from a stalwart like Nana.
It was nice to see my old Regiment (Maratha Light Infantry) on film - we boys do kick a**! :-) I could find myself nodding with Nan's take on society... for it's the sad truth! A bitter pill we all need to realise.
I also found my self drawing parallels with this film and the major theme of Tom Clancy's excellent book "Without Remorse".
In any case, a deserving film to see. The print isn't great and there are some glaring editing gaffes - but it's a 1991 film, and the gaffes aren't so horrible that they stick out like sore thumbs. The flow is non-stop. The story solid.
Budgetary constraints are readily apparent - and as are certain scenes which seem contrived rather than believable (some scenes with the terrorists makes it seem like it is easier than it is). But one can write this off to keeping the theme simple to sell to the masses.
Watch this film - you won't regret it.
