Book description I have to say that this is definitely the best picture book by Ezra Jack Keats that Ive ever read. In fact, its arguably one of the best picture books by anyone that Ive ever read. The ingenious illustrations and subtle, emotional story converge to perfection, especially at the very end of the book. Maggies happy days paddling her raft around her home with her pet cricket, Niki, joining the expeditions in her cage, are interrupted one day when an unknown person, calling himself only Pirate, swipes Niki and her cage. Maggie and her other friends urgently investigate around the nearby areas, trying to find some clue as to where her tiny friend has been taken and putting up signs intended for the Pirate, to communicate that hes welcome to keep the cage as long as he returns Niki, but the kidnapper doesnt take the deal. When Maggie finally happens upon where her cricket has been taken, she also finds out that the Pirate is just the new kid in town...but in the physical struggle to regain her friend, something bad happens that cannot be undone. In a memorable, surprisingly powerful ending that couldnt have been done in more realistic of a way, Maggie finds that even a Pirate can act out of inner pain, and even a Pirate can feel deep remorse for wrongs done and want to express restitution in some tangible way.
