An undercover Detroit cop navigates a dangerous neighborhood that's surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot to devastate the entire city.
KungFu Motown with plenty of Bullet / Steve MqQueen car chases.
Plenty of foul language gangster gang banging action.
Cinematography of a once great city exposed in all it's current desolation is OK.
But, I found no reason to watch it beyond the 1st 20 minutes when this Detroit native was looking for glimpses of his childhood neighborhood. And hoping the story might catch his attention.
But, no. There was nothing there.
Bad characters, bad acting, bad plot, bad, bad, bad... And finally, of course, bad memories. Nope, you can't go back!
In the future, Detroit is in chaos. The city decides to build a wall to separate the one percenters from the the rest, those living in the "brick mansions" as the area is called. There are checkpoints here and there to control traffic from one sector to the other.
In the brick mansions, a thug goes looking for someone named Lino because Lino owes him some drugs. Lino in the meantime is trying to destroy the drugs before the thug gets there. What follows is a wild 20 minute chase through town. Lino, a parkour master, escapes. But the main mobster knows where Lino's girl is, so he grabs her.
Elsewhere in the "good" area of Detroit another mobster who is above all the other mobsters we have so far, is told that he has to come up with the replacement drugs. A young member of his gang, Damien, agrees to transport the drugs to the brick mansions. As they go get the drugs in his secret drug distribution place, Damien alerts the cops and they raid the place. Damien is an undercover cop.
When the thugs in the brick mansions steal a vehicle with a neutron bomb, the city recruits Damien to retrieve the bomb. He gladly accepts because the mobster who has it is also the one who killed his father. But he will have to join forces with Lino, who by now is in jail. They reluctantly work together, Lino to get his girl, Damien to neutralize the bomb. But in the process we learn what the politicians are really up to.
Brick Mansions is an entertaining and different action movie. Not nearly as wild as its original the R-Rated DistrictB13. Brick Mansions is rated PG-13. It has a lot of story with a bit of a political message. Acting is decent. Even David Belle who's not much of an actor, does pretty well. It looks like they re-recorded his voice, but it worked out well. If you haven't seen District B13 or District 13: Ultimatum, you'll enjoy Brick Mansions. And if you want to see a more edgier versions, watch the originals. I don't see much use in comparing the original with this one. Direction is at times a bit iffy. Besson likes to give opportunities to directors, a good thing in itself, but he usually picks people with little experience directing. And this movie retains a bit of the goofiness or Besson movies even though fortunately there isn't one of those completely ridiculous characters that some of his movies had.
It’s a beat-for-beat remake of a movie whose plot was never meant to do anything except get characters to jump from rooftops, made by a less confident director (Camille Delamarre, one of the studio’s go-to editors) and set in a culture Besson has never been able to grasp. It’s also a silly pile-up of exaggerated action clichés—and much of the time, it’s pretty fun.
Both versions differ severely. For instance, the Extended Cut contains an entirely new soundtrack, David Belle has a different voice - at least that is the case in the English audio track - but he always has a French accent. A lot of the single scenes are recut and often have an alternate order. Some story details are altered, as well. And of course, violence is added to the Extended Cut which was probably removed from the Theatrical Version in order to get the PG-13 rating. a5c7b9f00b
