The cop test pilot for an experimental police helicopter learns the sinister implications of the new vehicle.
Blue Thunder is a specially modified helicopter. It is for police work, but is armed and designed to counter street insurgencies. Its makers want to show what it will do, but have to train Los Angeles Police pilot Frank Murphy to fly and use it in order to allow it to operate in the city. Murphy and the project pilot have differences going back to Vietnam. The conflict between them continues to heat up as Murphy begins to suspect that Blue Thunder is more than has been disclosed.
SPOILERS BELOW!!!
I'm going to assume that who ever reads this has already seen the movie, so I will start at the 3/4 mark in the film. The point of the movie was to expose the evil purpose of the helicopter. This was accomplished when officer Murphy's girlfriend got the tape to the news studio. Mission accomplished- did Murphy then land the chopper and accept a probable commendation for exposing corruption in the LAPD? Nooooooo, he goes on a wild chase through LA, first with fellow LAPD officers, causing one chopper to crash, killing innocent officers in the line of duty who probably had families. Did he stop here? Nooo!!, he engages 2 F-16s, tricking them into firing into an office building and a Chinese restaurant, resulting in the deaths of many civilians and then destroying one of the planes. The pilot ejects safely, but I wonder where that 30-40 tons of jet plane wreckage fell? Which leads to the finale, the great chopper battle!! You think the army would have sent a Cobra gunship (Apaches didn't arrive on the scene until 1985) to take him out, but instead we get a Hughes 500. You all know what happens next.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the effects, but come on!!
I paid my belated and, unfortunately, measly tribute to Roy Scheider (a very fine and underrated actor who passed away recently) via this hi-tech actioner, which I recall catching on Italian TV back in the mid-80s in a weekly run of Hollywood blockbusters that included everything from STAR WARS (1977) to ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981) and STAYING ALIVE (1983); besides BLUE THUNDER, I was supposed to re-acquaint myself with 2010 (1984) as well, but couldn't quite fit it in my tight schedule!
Anyway, the titular vehicle is a highly-sophisticated chopper a contemporaneous effort, Clint Eastwood's FIREFOX (1982), dealt with a supersonic fighter jet which corrupt government officials want to adopt as a deadly war weapon. Scheider is a seasoned helicopter cop who assists in the apprehension of criminals; since he's the star and hero of the picture, his character is described as the top man in this line of work. However, distraction from duty over an equestrienne who teasingly practices in the nude, leads to the murder of a female member from the Mayor's Office who had opposed the nature of the "Blue Thunder" project. Still, as often happens, Scheider is depicted as being troubled by conscience which has to do with his experiences in Vietnam; equally predictable is the fact that the irresponsible officer who was involved in that past incident (Malcolm McDowell) turns up again now actually, he's part of the conspiracy revolving around the chopper.
Aiding Scheider is rookie sidekick Daniel Stern (who eventually pays with his life, naturally) and the protagonist's kooky girlfriend Candy Clark (who even gets in on the action via a car chase by police on the busy L.A. streets); Scheider's tough but world-weary, and outwardly compliant, superior is played by Warren Oates in his farewell performance (the film, in fact, is dedicated to him). It's all reasonably enjoyable and exciting throughout director Badham, incidentally, made the similarly technique-driven WAR GAMES (1983) soon after though the gratuitous mayhem in public places seen here perhaps wouldn't go down too well with today's 9/11-sensitive audiences!
John Badham's exciting thriller about an L.A. detective (Roy Scheider) who battles against the government creeps who have created a monstrous helicopter to be used for 1984-style crowd control. Great action in a David-versus-Goliath story. [22 July 1983, p.10]
The DVD version differs in one scene compared to the tape version. The VHS is identical to the laserdisc and earlier TV broadcasts. a5c7b9f00b
