A Texas Ranger and a ruthless narcotics kingpin - they were childhood friends, now they are adversaries...
When they were kids Texas Ranger Jack Benteen used to be best friends with drug kingpin Cash Bailey. At present, however, the only element linking them together is Jack's girlfriend Sarita, who used to be with Cash. She returns to Cash as a voluntary hostage to make certain that Jack keeps his hands off the drug lord's operation. On top of that, there is a meticulously planned drug bust, in which both Jack and Cash butt heads with CIA-funded paramilitary Maj. Paul Hackett, following his own agenda.
The director and the star of "48 HRS" (Walter Hill and Nick Nolte) are re-united for this high energy, violent action film about a primitive Texas ranger who combats Mexican drug lords and a band of hi-tech, ex-military mercenaries with good old fashioned heart, determination and a shotgun.
Sheriff Jack Benteen has his share of problems. Drug runners are nothing short of a pestilence in his town, and the ring leader is his childhood buddy, Cash Bailey. As if that isn't enough, a small group of crack commandos has just begun to do some dirty work locally as well. But if anyone can handle the situation, it's this no nonsense sheriff. Nolte plays the hard-edged lawman convincingly in a forceful movie that contains a level of violence many would call gratuitous.
There is certainly plenty of shoot outs and explosions for the action fan who revels in entertainment that's delivered at break neck speed. Writers John Milius and Fred Rexer, along with screenwriters Deric Washburn and Harry Kleiner, have provided a reasonable plot whilst concentrating on giving the special f/x and weapons crews plenty to do, and they certainly deliver an eye full.
In essence, action is what "Extreme Prejudice" is all about, and it's what the movie does best (or worst depending on your taste). Please avoid this film at all costs if blood and guts gun play is not your scene. Jerry Goldsmith's typical score is quite effective.

Extreme Prejudice is a solid movie, a rather gritty, action-packed Western. The film is labeled as a Western, but it's really not a Western in the traditional sense. At least I got the impression of that. I am not surprised the film was directed by Walter Hill. This is your typical rough, gritty 80's film. He has a way of taking characters and making them extremely rough people, but very capable. For the most part, I enjoyed the spectacle of the film.
Walter Hill's film essentially talks about life as a Texas Ranger(and we are not talking Chuck Norris-style here). Jack Banteen is a Texas Ranger who is sworn to uphold the law and Cash Bailey is a drug tycoon across the border and Jack's former childhood best friend. They are also in love with the same woman, Sarita. Now may the best man win!
The acting is actually decent. Nick Nolte can actually speak clearly here and he does an okay job. He is rough, mean, but he kick lots of butt. Powers Boothe is pretty good as Jack's rival. Rip Torn makes a good appearance as Jack's partner. Finally, we get some fine supporting performances from Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, and William Forsycthe.
Overall, Extreme Prejudice is a decent action film. These are the kind of films which make the 80's so special. I had a good time watching Nolte take out his anger on the bad guys. While not a Western in the traditional sense, the film, especially the ending does pay homage to the superior The Wild Bunch. If you are here for the action, this is your kind of film. I rate this film 8/10.
