In Berlin, the Europol researcher Mika Coretti shows evidences of the existence of a network of assassin ninjas in the murder of politicians to her chief Ryan Maslow. She is hunted down by the ninjas and protected by the mysterious ninja Raizo. Mika learns that Raizo is an orphan raised by the Ozunu Clan in Japan and brutally trained since childhood to be a heartless killer by his master Ozunu. Raizo has been attracted by the kind Kiriko since when he was a boy. When Kiriko decides to runaway from the Ozunu Clan, she is captured and executed by Raizo's ninja brother Takeshi. Soon Raizo turns against Ozunu and cuts his face. Now he is also hunted down by his ninja brothers. Mika convinces Raizo to meet Maslow, but they are betrayed. Will they survive the attack of the Ozunu Clan?
Trained since childhood to be a lethal killer, Raizo has since turned his back on the Ozunu clan that raised him and now seeks revenge for their heartless murders. Teaming up with Europol investigator Mika, Raizo steadily butchers his enemies while inching ever closer to the long-awaited bloody reunion with his former master.
It's not often I'm offended by a movie but Ninja Assassin was awful. Did you say 'ninjas'? They are as much ninja as Will Smith Jnr is a 'karate kid'. 'Oh it's all the same!' some say. So I guess boxing and UFC are too. The movie is custom made for only the most naive of film goers and 13 year old boys. Many would argue that as a tautology.
Yet, is a ninja film actually staring some Japanese doing actual ninjutsu, and not just a kung fu movie re-skinned, so impossible? I welcome the day when ninja are treated even half as well as Sho Kosugi did back when they were at their Western peak. There are far superior films on the subject matter in Japan, yet those film reportedly 'bore' foreign audiences with their realism and physically grounded martial arts.
That's fair enough, but films like Kuro Obi show how stunning Japanese budo can be on screen, and Owl's Castle shows how a ninja's life could be one of brain squeezing intrigue. There's no need to throw away such beauty and minimalist perfection, in favour of cheap thrills via anachronistic kung-fu. The ninja weren't the kind to leave trails of dissected bodies behind. That's an invention of anime and comic book myth.
As spies and covert killers, their work was much more subtle and dare I say, cerebral. Owl's Castle illustrates this and I guess that's why it has been labeled as 'boring'. Go figure. And cerebral is not a word I would use for any aspect of the film's plot or characterisation, though there's plenty of 'cerebral matter' on display throughout the many brainless (LOL) fight scenes.
I love cheesy genre films as much as the next ninja fan, and my collection is filled with schlock, but what I don't like is careless and derivative story telling. Great schlock has heart. This film's heart has already been ripped away, thus reducing what remained to a paint by numbers exercise in predictable emptiness, but with some excellently done, albeit entirely anachronistic fight scenes.
If you're planning on going over the top there can be but one destination... NINJA ASSASSIN.
Despite having one of the most redundant movie titles ever, this joint is an express train to Badassvill. NINJA ASSASSIN is exactly what a ninja flick is supposed to be, precisely what every 80's ninja flick wanted to be and totally what I'd have done if I made ninja flicks. Geysers of ninja blood not medically feasible, cascades of ninja shuriken* blocking out the light and an acid trip of ninja martial arts unseen since The Matrix await you.
Is there a ninja story? Ninja please!
If you're put off by brutal ninja training flashbacks, supernatural ninja powers, forbidden ninja love, ninja betrayal, ninja vengeance and plenty of tough-guy ninja glaring, go watch the notebook sissy-pants cuz NINJA ASSASSIN is going to sneak up and kick you in the girly parts in a completely unsneaky way.
DO NOT watch this movie with people who presume to know anything about ninjas, historically minded ass-tards that can't just enjoy stuff or female companions who have ever said "I don't get it." during a movie.
Ninja.
*I must note that the shuriken in this movie aren't the credit card thin coaster sized hunks of crap you'd buy at the local dirt mall form the creepy guy. NO SIR! These things are armor piercing hub caps that make a noise in flight like a P-51's prop coming loose sound like a damn tire iron when they hit something.
Numbingly gory when it isn’t just plain numbing.
In Singapore only a cut version of this movie was released in order to get a rating. This censored version misses out nearly 45 seconds of violent scenes that are featured in the uncensored versions. The following advisories are provided byHome Box Office
