Book descriptionI dont get this novel at all. What was Bear shooting for? The story revolves around a WWII-era Japanese pilot who was kidnapped by aliens and forced to live on an alien planet for 400 years while they observed him. I wont spoil it, although the ending is a letdown. A lot happens to him during his journeys with Anna Nestor, a rich celebrity business conglomerate owner, and none of it has any impact on the ending. I dont even understand how they ended up back on the planet. It seems that Bear just started skipping ahead, which was confusing and disjointed. Hes writing in present-tense one page, and then past-tense the next page, without a creative reason as far as I can tell. A lot was explained in the last fourth, but most was not, and that irritated me. If this were a movie, Id say it suffered from an angry editor who went nuts with the scissors. There are some enjoyable scenes and ideas here as well, and its not a terrible sci-fi story, it just doesnt satisfy. (Kind of a Bear trademark, I suppose).
