Book descriptionThis tells the story of Colonel Henry Knoxs feat of leading a team to retrieve much-needed artillery from Fort Ticonderoga for General Washingtons troops in Boston, through miles of mountains, rivers, and snow. Its an inspiring story, and one I never knew! (Apparently, my knowledge of the American Revolution ended with Lexington and Concord) Henry Knoxs stubborn refusal to accept defeat led to the freeing of Boston from the British siege. Those who made the trek faced not only obstacles due to terrain, but also weather and just the sheer weight of the weapons they were moving. The willingness of those who stepped forward to make this rough journey was admirable, a testament to their belief in the cause of liberty. Of course, the dialogue and details are fictionalized (is that a word?), but its a great way to learn about this triumphant episode of the war and the challenges they faced while accomplishing this task. The story is told with an emphasis on the younger brother of Henry Knox, William, and intersperses a young Paul Revere, Jr. into the story. Im not sure if their friendship is real or not. I only gave it 3 stars (still, that means I liked it, according to the classifications here on goodreads), because the writing wasnt that thrilling. It told of their many challenges and how they resolved them, but I never got that feeling of being there and each problem seemed to be overcome really quickly and easily. (Maybe this is to keep the book short enough for kids to stay interested...the actual trip was 6 weeks and Im sure each day felt like forever to these men).
