Book descriptionI was in Shakespeare And Company bookshop in Paris on the 10th of November 2012 when I bought this book. I had been wandering/wondering around Paris for hours, and, in a fit of malaise and ennui (the type that only Paris in the rain can cause a lonely and starving literature student to be in), I turned to seek solace in a bookshop. Bookshops have always held a prized place to me. They have a soporific effect, acting as a talisman or a charm to ward of depression and fear and nausea. A bookshop in Paris, a famous bookshop known for harbouring travelling writers and bohemians, is the stuff of legend, and perhaps represents the quintessential bookshop experience. Every other bookshop pales in comparison, becomes every other bookshop instead of the bookshop. They are fragments, ruins of bookshops I use to hold up to the image of the Shakespeare And Company.The first sentence drew me in, made me pause in my systematic and painstaking exploration of the other shelves and other books and other first sentence, all of which disappeared into the ether of nothingness.After the best book, the most beautiful woman, or the finest desert youve ever seen, you tell yourself this is where the rest of your life begins. But it isnt, he goes on to say. Indeed, the crux of these fragments are that the life you expect to be waiting for you out there after experiencing something truly awesome merely become life itself. It was merely the illusion of the end. That horizon that marks the end of sight and the beginning of a new day becomes the starting point for another horizon and another new day and the endless succession of days that will follow.The fragments themselves are small insights into the thoughts of Baudrillard. They dont aim at anything so grand and all encompassing as The System of Objects, but they manage to say more and say it with a fore and vigour that his longer works lack. That is the strength of the fragment. Short aphorisms, witty comebacks to unasked questions, meta-philosophical critiques of society, desire, fellatio, and language.Either Evil has no existence of its own, he asks in a paragraph that started with a question regarding the fidelity of women, and functions merely by reference to the existence of Good, or there is an autonomous principle of Evil. If that is the case, he goes on to say, disregarding the direct question of fidelity, the evidence of Evil is at least as reassuring to the mind as the evidence of God.Is it not the point of philosophy to force the audience to permit themselves to ask questions? To try and understand what it is they think they know? But in another sense, Baudrillard asks, the question suggests that I have to be loved one way or another. What question? THE question? That is the entire fragment and it exists as complete.
