In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.
In an alternative Victorian Age Gotham City, Batman begins his war on crime while he investigates a new series of murders by Jack the Ripper.
Given how disappointing some recent DC animated films have been, this is a nice return to quality.
This is an Elseworlds film featuring Batman chasing Jack-the-Ripper in 17th-century Gotham. What enfolds is a fairly entertaining thriller. Plotting is mostly solid, though the film ends rather abruptly with one major loose end. Characterization is strong. In fact, this is probably one of the stronger chemistries between Batman and Catwoman that I've seen. Besides, it's just kind of fun seeing the Batman characters depicted from a 17th-century angle.
The fight scenes are quite good. The final battle doesn't disappoint.
On the downside, much of the animation doesn't fit the moody, serious nature of the film and lacks atmosphere. Too many of the scenes are brightly lit. Remember how a lot of Batman films use gothic or other types of striking architecture? None of that here. It's just a lot of regular-looking buildings. The character designs have more of a children's cartoon feel to them. Also, a lot of the direction and camera angles are rather average and don't add anything. (Though in fairness this is a made-for-video film, so they had to work with the budget they had.)
Also, they could've turned the villain's monologue down a notch. I know this movie is rated R and is about a deranged killer, but it felt they were trying too hard. There's a difference between dark and obviously trying to be dark. (Ever see the second Aliens vs. Predator? It's like that.)
As a fan of both animation and The Bat I have long wondered why Warner is so reluctant to actually want to try and deliver anything but this cheap looking tripe.
The usual is here. Uninspired designs, purposeless movement in some shots and deadeyed stiff awkwardness in the rest. Dead camera angles and radiodrama soundwork. Not to mention that the story is about as riveting as a dry wall.
One can tell that underneath all this mediocrity is a hard hitting gritty and gory retelling of The Dark Knight as the victorian era Gotham's Sherlock vs a very gruesome Jack The Ripper... But the final product feels more like an early cd rom era point n click adventure than anything worth mentioning after the credits rolled. Such a shame they refuse to do anything worthwhile with these endeavours.
Dc animation fans deserve better...
Some originally speculated that "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" would be merged with its sequel story "Master of the Future." However, it seems that the creative team at DC Animation has instead chosen to expand upon the original story with new scenes, characters and plot elements. Added characters include Selina Kyle; (Mrs.) Barbara Gordon; Harvey Bullock; Jason Todd; Hugo Strange; and Pamela Isley (as Ivy the Plant Lady). Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, originally published in 1989, is considered to be DC Comics' first Elseworlds story.
