For many churches over the last century, church membership has been a very simple process. At the end of any service, any individual could walk down the aisle and declare their intent to join the local fellowship of believers. At that time the pastor would announce their intention in joining the church and they would almost immediately be welcomed into the fellowship as a full member of the local church. This acceptance into membership is a public endorsement of the individual's relationship with God through their faith in Jesus, their submission to these particular pastors and their commitment and accountability to this particular church body. It also allows them to vote on church matters and serve the church in official capacities. Church membership carries with it a great deal of meaning, but the process through which members have been accepted has unfortunately not reflected that deep meaning. Across the evangelical world of churches, people are joining churches without truly knowing what they are joining or why they are joining. Across the evangelical world churches are also accepting members without truly knowing those individuals or what they believe about the most essential doctrines of the faith. We live in an era where one's claim to "believe in Jesus" cannot be taken at face value. Mormons, Jehovah's witnesses, Baptists and the liberal university student may all claim to "believe in Jesus", but they all mean very different things. So how do we protect God's church from false teachings, unconverted church members and law suits? How do we love and care for people well on the front end so that they are well prepared to serve the body of Christ? This 6-week membership class is designed to be a practical tool to both protect the church and shepherd the church member into the beautiful gift that is church membership.
