MI6's top assassin (Mark Strong) has a brother. Unfortunately for him, he's a football hooligan (Sacha Baron Cohen) from the town of Grimsby. Nobby has everything a man from the poor English fishing town of Grimsby could want - 9 children and the most attractive girlfriend in northern England (Rebel Wilson). There's only one thing missing in his life: his little brother, Sebastian. After they were adopted by different families as children, Nobby spent 28 years searching for him. Upon hearing of his location, Nobby sets off to reunite with his brother, unaware that not only is his brother an MI6 agent, but he's just uncovered a plot that puts the world in danger. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realizes that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot.
Nobby Graves is a working class man, with a wife and several kids, living in Grimsby. His brother, Sebastian, went missing 28 years ago and he hasn't seen him since. Little does he know that Sebastian is now a secret agent with MI6. Sebastian is currently working on foiling an attempt by a terrorist organisation to disrupt a prestigious event and kill a famous actress and social activist. Nobby goes to the event to meet Sebastian but hinders Sebastian's operation, making Sebastian look like the perpetrator of a terrorist act. Trying to track down the actual terrorists while on the run from the law, the two brothers now need to rely on each other more than ever.
I don't throw around the word "genius," but unreservedly apply it to Sacha Baron Cohen as a comedian. He has me laughing too much to care if his humor is in poor taste or not. Though it is ultimately best that many people are put off by his humor, I regret that there will not be a sequel to this box office bomb.
Grimsby, or as I prefer, The Brothers Grimsby reaches great heights of hilariousness without overstaying its welcome at 83 minutes. Furthermore, there is story enough to have me care for the main characters. I'd probably rate it an 8/10 if not for the overly frenetic action sequences.
As for its dismal box office returns, it seems that too many Americans don't get the British and couldn't care less. It also seems that too many people failed to perceive a well-wrought story beyond the risqué comedy. They went to the trouble of offering a dignified and reasonably coherent storyline, and like pearls before swine, people high-horsed it in response. Sheesh!
I liked Borat, but consider this and the mockumentary Brüno to be Sacha Baron Cohen at his very best!
Grimsby, for all the cringeworthy-ness in the world, is funny. There's no consistency, some jokes are subtle, others are trivial. Sacha Baron Cohen's work is least of all full of surprises. We know it's going to be crass, misogynistic and outrageous. His latest character Nobby, a hooligan from Grimsby, spends his time in an England football shirt and flip-flops, annoying his straight-laced brother Sebastian (Mark Strong), who counters his stupidity with an uptight seriousness. Sebastian's an Mi5 agent whose latest assignment gets disrupted by Nobby. Grimsby is fun for sure, but tires quickly, the 83 minutes running time feeling longer than it should.
Grimsby has the occasional laugh and a succession of finely wrought grossout spectaculars which are reasonably entertaining.... But with its cod-Bond and mock-action material it carries a weird overall feel, like kids’ TV but produced on a lavish scale with added filth.
