5000 years after a great war of Gems, gemstone-like beings from a planet called Homeworld, we meet Steven, a half boy half gem who lives with the "Crystal Gems" Garnet, Amythest, and Pearl, who live on earth after they rebelled against Homeworld. The story follows Steven's adventures, whether he is fighting monsters or learning to control his own powers.
A team of intergalactic warriors fights to protect the universe, but the combination of three highly trained beings and one quirky young boy leaves the team struggling to overcome the dangerous scenarios that are put in front of them.
The author "natebridgeman" evidently don't know what he's/she is talking about.These Character designs are very sharp and original,the gems are based on actual gems and their skin color match.I actually miss shows with sharp geometric figures and I'm glad Rebecca Sugar brought this to her show,and ironically the show was nominated for a Annie awards for it's completely original character designs (A great accomplishment).

The dialogue is like "Plan 9 from Outer Space"? Yeah because that makes sense,not once (So far) in the show have they said anything about aliens or Zombies.The show is about a kid name Steven Universe who is half gem (Mother side) and half human (Father side),who goes on "fun" and magical adventures with a female fighting team called The Crystal Gems or for short "The Gems".Each gem is name after a gem except Steven who has a Rose-quart gem,anyway they go on magical adventures and Steven sing songs, like come on, a 8 years old can understand the concept well enough to enjoy the show.

A pilot episode is a trial episode that's aired before the first series to gauge audience response. They had 10 minutes and he/she was expecting a back story? No it doesn't work like that,even Adventure Time pilot (The show you praise)had no back story, but like the Steven Universe pilot it gave us the sense to what show is about, and what we can expect.

The quote you questioned "If every pork chop was perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs" is such a great quote,and I love it.It means if everyone was perfect (Pork chop) then we wouldn't be different or have originality (Hot dog) it has nothing to do with meat message wise.The show actually embrace not being perfect which is why I love it,and also why the character designs are so different from each other (Various body shapes,hair style,etc.) notice how Steven mess up constantly but they never get mad,no they embrace him for learning of experience.

Usually I would ignore stupidity from such a person but I couldn't let him/her go around the internet bashing something he admits to not knowing.My only problem about the show is that it's a musical but I've only heard one song, like come on more music,I love your songs Rebecca Sugar but other than that great show,and the background music is just amazing.
I've not given this a "10" for two reasons.

Reason one, I've only watched the opening episode so do not consider myself fit to fully judge and secondly I'd only give a ten to perfection. Still it impressed me so much that I decided to write this review straight away so that the emotions it evoked would still be raw and real.

While not anime as in the Japanese form, this production has all the attributes of the best anime. It feels fresh and dynamic with great characters that are attractive and unique due to their human imperfections. The dialogue is crisp and energetic drawing the viewer in so that you feel the moment along with each character. On addition, the artwork is clean, simple and yet completely unique with its clear outlines and balanced colours.

Steven the main character in the first episode is a lovely chubby boy who is looked after by the three Gems who are "gem" super powered heroines that guard the universe. Pearl is slim and a bit OCD, Amethyst is rubenesque, ;aid back and a bit of a slob while Garnet is more amazon in stature and is not into speeches but lets her actions speak for her. The gems as a trio come across as matronly in nature. They work together to care and protect Steven who they see both as their protégé and their hope for the future to replace his lost mother who was a very powerful gem. While it is not implicitly stated they treat Steven almost as their adopted child. So Very early into the episode you get to feel the love.

Stevens Universe has the a very positive female orientated perspective. All the Gems seem to have been and are intrinsically female with Steven being the exception who is accepted rather than excluded. So Steven ends up with three mothers but no male role model, as yet (remember I've only seen one episode). Also the gem that gives him his powers is rose pink and his gem power is protective rather than destructive which is not stereotypically male but more in sync with where the perceived modern male role model is hopefully moving to.

So!! Fresh, different and did I forget to say funny? Yesl, I laughed out loud and had some happy tears too. Stevens innocence as a searching developing child with his own way at looking at his universe caught me by surprise.

If you could try one series that by incorporating adult insights might put you back in touch with your inner child then this might just be the one for you. Enjoy!!
