They discover that her execution was intentional, and resolve to find the criminals by themselves.Four adopted brothers come to avenge their mother's death in what appears to be a random killing in a grocery store robbery. However, the boys' investigation of the death reveals more nefarious activities involving the one brother's business dealings with a notorious local hoodlum. Two cops who are trying to solve the case may also not be what they seem.Before watching this movie I saw the last four episodes of 'The Shield' season one. Perhaps that spoiled me. This film is just OK, no more. Some of the scenes are unintentionally humorous: Bad guys take forever shooting up the mom's old house with fully-automatic weapons, the brothers defend with shotguns,magnums and 45s. Rock star bro is screaming incessantly after getting shot. It sounds like WWIII. Aside from that, seems like a quiet, well-kept-up neighborhood. Where are the police? To make this even worse, after it's all over, one brother yells out:"Somebody call 911!". Ya think? How about when Marky Mark holds a gun on the -crowd- at a basketball game? Why not give these guys the power to fly and see through walls? Singleton seems to know that there are huge gaps in the tension, which he artificially tries to pick up with way too many gay put downs between the heroes, to the point that I wanted at least one of them to admit that he -was- gay, but no, it was just good fun, (although not for the viewer).The cast is good, and a couple of things are explained well enough, so 5 stars instead of maybe two.This movie,is surprising. It comes across at first as just another typical action movie, but once you get in, you realize that there is so much more depth. Each brother has a back story, but you don't get to know it, just the extreme basics, making you wonder. Take Jack for instance, at the dinner table, he visions his mother saying "I know you terrible things were done to you..." that makes you wonder what happened. You get drawn in the story.
The action, obviously, is what draws most people in. But it is really more about family. How far are you willing to go for your family, and there is always a chance to redeem yourself.
What really brings the movie together is the brothers themselves, the actors. I can't imagine anyone other than this group of guys in it. I didn't know Garrett Hedlund before this movie, but he was phenomenal. As the boards state below, every tearjerker scene involves him, because he makes it so real. he is the character every viewer identifies with best. He has that boyish charisma makes him lovable, yet he is still distant. I won't go into any further details, because it would give things away, but its the only good action movie that I have wanted to cuddle up and just say "I love my family". ha ha.
This movie is awesome. Not too much language, no extreme sex scenes (no nudity), and amazing action/ decent violence. What more could you ask for???Atmospheric, propulsive and ultimately preposterous melodrama.... Evelyn drives up to the store? "Somebody To Love" by Jefferson Airplane.
