I am starting on a Goat Island Skiff and have a 13 yr old nephew who'd like to build a boat as well. The Bolger Teal looks like a simple design for him but his older brothers (ea 200lbs +) want him to build something with decent performance. My nephew will not have the time nor do I want to spend the money. Teal is my second boatbuilding project, a Phil Bolger, Harold Payson collaboration. My first boat was Bolger's Micro Trawler and I got hooked real bad (good) on this boat thing. I have thoroughly enjoyed Micro Trawler. Harold sold me on Teal and that was that. I ordered the plans from him and gathered up the materials. I built Bolger's Teal a year ago primarily for rowing and to see if I could enjoy learning to sail. Well, the sailing part was easy to discern that I am not a sailor and will never be. So, I rowed Teal for an entire season and did enjoy the rowing, but the boat seemed to me a total novice at rowing, to be subject to the slightest wind. To learn building skills to help with the process, and to give us something in which to learn to sail, we built Bolger's Teal using step-by-step, detailed instructions in Harold "Dynamite" Payson's Instant Boats.
