The magical kingdom of Lucis is home to the hallowed Crystal, but the menacing empire of Niflheim will stop at nothing to make it theirs. War has raged between the two for as long as most can remember. King Regis of Lucis commands an elite force of soldiers dubbed the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king's magic, Nyx Ulric and his fellow glaives stand before the crown city of Insomnia, fighting to stay the inexorable advance of Niflheim's imperial army. Before the overwhelming military might of the empire, King Regis can only salvage his kingdom by accepting an ultimatum-he must cede all lands outside the crown city, and see his son, Prince Noctis, wed to Lady Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae now captive of Niflheim. As the war of wills rages, the machinations of Niflheim transform Insomnia into an awe-inspiring battleground, pulling Nyx into a struggle for the very survival of the kingdom.
King Regis, who oversees the land of Lucis, commands his army of soldiers to protect the kingdom from the Niflheim empire's plans to steal the sacred crystal which gives Lucis its magic and power.
It is rather obvious, the name of the game included in the title and all, but it also aptly describes the movie. An animated movie, and for the most part animated well in my opinion, but heavily influenced by the game I presume. And when it comes to graphics, that's nothing bad. But when it comes to story, that's a different matter. Here, the media movie and game differs wildly. In games ( I should note that I have not played Final Fantasy and can't refer to that specific game) the story is pretty linear. One event after another, mostly one battle (or challenge) after another. That doesn't really cut it in a movie though. Here you need more of a background, more character and more of an explanation of why things is happening. The story in this is pretty thin about such things, but acceptable if you think of it as a simple action movie. The ending though is a letdown. It is not much of a ending at all. No resolution of what becomes of the characters or what they fought for. It is nothing more but an empty promise of more, a next challenge or battle. I guess the story continues in a game somewhere, making this one of the longest commercials ever made.

Wow! Just wow! There was a time when I thought Resident Evil and Beowulf were good CGI makes. But this just takes it to a new level. This is what superhero movies and co. should look like. It gives a lot of license to use reality with graphics.
I must also say that I know nothing about Final Fantasy games, so I can't say if the story is coherent with the games or not. But I still liked it and the story wasn't so difficult to follow. Everything is fully explained.
This movie was not just CG, it had the story, the heart. You could feel what the character was feeling, and everything made sense. Have to give a 10/10 for direction as well.
Instead of trying to adapt the video game experience into a film format, Kingsglaive transforms the movie-going experience into something familiar to video game fans. It’s essentially a really long cutscene.
