On a freezing day of December in 1931, the greyed recluse and well-experienced fur trapper, Albert Johnson, while descending to town to get provisions, he interrupts an organised dogfight to save a mortally wounded canine. Disgraced before his comrades, the dog breeder demands that Johnson be arrested for manslaughter, forcing the hardened man of the law, the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant, Edgar Millen, to hesitantly bring an armed-to-the-teeth posse on his doorstep. Under those circumstances, Johnson will attempt to flee to the sanctuary of the Alaskan borders through the rugged and snow-capped landscape; however, the trigger-happy executors are within a hair's breadth of taking him down. Will the killings in the name vengeance ever stop?
In 1931 Canada, Yukon trapper Johnson has a feud with a dog owner who later retaliates by publicly accusing Johnson of murder and thus triggering a police manhunt in the wilderness.
I just thought I'd add that this movie is roughly based on the true story of "Mad Trapper" Albert Johnson. In 1932, Johnson got into a shootout with an RCMP who was investigating illegal trapping. The mountie returned 10 days later with reinforcements and there was another lengthy gun battle. The weeks-long tracking of Johnson over the Canadian wilderness drew world-wide attention and his eventual death in a final gunbattle led to the famous "the mounties always get their man" legend. The pursuit of Johnson also marked the first time an airplane was used in tracking. No one ever actually knew who the "mad trapper" really was or where he came from. He had over $2000 on him at his death -- a huge sum in those days. Where did he get it?
Only in rough outline does the movie bear resemblance to the true tale. Nonetheless, it's a decent effort for Bronson (whose performances improve as the amount of his dialog decreases). Lee Marvin is solid but not particularly impressive. Great scenery, though.
The best scene of a cabin exploding! They blow up Bronson's cabin with dynamite, and HE COMES OUT SHOOTING! This movie is klondike awesome. Bronson jumps from a cliff onto the top of a 50 ft. douglas fir, and manages to pick off a few of his assailants on the way down.
Lee Marvin and Bronson are both fantastic in this 1981 sleeper. Bronson has about 12 lines of dialog, yet he makes running in snow shoes look easy.
