Book descriptionThis is an extremely engaging book about Latin America at the beginning of the ’90. Besides the amount of information related to that period, I really enjoyed Alma Guillermoprieto’s writing style. She may be describing various political events, but she never forgets to write about how these events affect all layers of society. This collection of short stories touches subjects like Sendero Luminoso (how it affected Peruvian society and how its leader was captured), Pablo Escobar, the drug trade, Mexico City’s pepenadores, Panama’s relationship with the US. One of my favourite readings was the one describing the presidential campaign that brought Alberto Fujimori and Mario Vargas Llosa against each other. Although, I am a big fan of Llosa as a writer, I didn’t know many things about this episode in his life. And my only information about Fujimori was that his daughter, Keiko, was a candidate for the 2016 elections (and while I was visiting Peru, there were protests against her). Another topic skilfully touched was the country’s history of racism: In the end, it was not the novelist but his supporters who lost the election for him. He cannot be faulted for being honest about the recessionary, monetarist program he saw as the only way to drag Peru out of the abyss, and he might even have been forgiven his white turtlenecks and love of FrenchвЂ"this was, after all, the cafГ©-society Mario everyone already knew. What he was savaged for on Election Day was not knowing how to choose his friends. His friends called his opponent El ChinitoвЂ"the affectionate diminutive being a favorite recourse of Latin-American racismвЂ"and the dark-skinned people who had heard themselves addressed forever as indios and little indios and cholos de mierda liked Fujimori better each time they heard the nickname. (He had the good grace to use the term himself, shouting “El Chinito has arrived!” on his first campaign tours, when there was nobody to do advance work for him.) For its election-week issue, the news magazine Caretas ran a cover that featured Fujimori wearing the indios’ peaked wool-knit cap with earflaps and holding a llama on a leash, with his campaign sloganвЂ"“A President Like You”вЂ"punctuated as a question. The intention behind it was vicious, but if the cover had come out a few weeks earlier it could have served as Fujimori’s best campaign poster.The other story that comes to my mind is the one related to Fernando Affonso Collor de Mello, the first democratically elected president of Brazil after the military government. (view spoiler)[The story of his impeachment was overshadowed by the death of a rising telenovela star, showing the huge impact TV Globo and its productions had on Brazilian society:TV Globo officials like to point out that the program with the highest average audience share remains the half-hour evening news, but that program is not the one that gets discussed the following morning at the office. The news features characters like Collor de Mello or his replacement, the odorless, flavorless Itamar Franco, who seems incapable of more than pained expressions of dismay as the great ship of state sinks slowly into a mudbank. On the news, executives are kidnapped and murdered, state enterprises go bankrupt, drug lords wage war in the favelas, and sewer systems erupt in the streets, all of which is to say that in Brazilian terms nothing happens. In the telenovelas, executives are kidnapped and drug lords wage war in the favelas, but then the kidnapper is caught, the drug lord meets a nice girl and goes straight, the crooked executive’s righteous son inherits the family business, and moral order is restored to the world. Things change. They change in precisely the same fashion in every single novela, which is as it should be, and during the daily three hours of first-run telenovela programming viewers can fantasize that the real Brazil is not the hopeless swamp of moral confusion and economic chaos that it sometimes feels likeвЂ"not the place where citizens can freely and directly elect a President for the first time in twenty-nine years only to have him turn around and thumb his nose at them, for exampleвЂ"but a place where family values withstand all assaults, the poor eventually find jobs and always have enough to eat, and even the wicked can be redeemed. And, in that sense, the murder of Daniella Perez, the eerie resemblance between events onscreen and off, was thrilling, breathtaking evidence that reality could, even if only once, resemble the marvellous, lavish universe of the telenovela, so filled with potential and with the liberatingly unrealistic.
