Henry, a newly resurrected cyborg who must save his wife/creator from the clutches of a psychotic tyrant with telekinetic powers, AKAN, and his army of mercenaries. Fighting alongside Henry is Jimmy, who is Henry's only hope to make it through the day. Hardcore takes place over the course of one day, in Moscow, Russia.
Hardcore Henry is an action film told from a first person perspective: You remember nothing. Mainly because you've just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who's got her? His name's Akan; he's a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You're also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy. He may be on your side, but you aren't sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You're likely going to need it...
Producers in the film industry is always trying to find new and innovative ways of allowing the audience to feel more involved in their film and immerse them in the world that has been created. So in the competitive industry that is film, what else is there left to do to achieve this audience goal? In 2016, Writer, Director Ilya Naishuller answered this with 3 letters. P.O.V. No film has done more to immerse it's audience better than the crowd funded, first person shooter movie Hardcore Henry. This hard hitting action movie stars you, the viewer as Henry, a man brought back from the dead as a cyborg whose wife gets kidnapped by some telekinetic dude, and now you and an army of Sharlto Copelys must save her and stop this evil... So Chop Chop you better get a move on!
THIS FILM IS AWESOME! The first person style worked perfectly with the fast pace action sequences the film is packed with. Of course the camera is going to be a little jerky due to it being the point of view of a person but its so slight that it's not a problem. The only time I would say the POV gets a little bit too jerky is the final fight, but in all fairness, Henry does have to fight and oncoming horde of enemies who look like the cast of A Clockwork Orange trained to fight in that super cool Showdown at House of Blue Leaves Kill Bill Vol 1 scene. To me the gimmick was fantastic and literally brought you close to the action. I know that this film is style over substance, but you walk in knowing this full well so if you can sit back and have fun then you are in for a brutally kick ass ride.
The film only really has 4 actors really (the cast list is about 90% stunt people) of which only two are noteworthy. One for good reasons and one for being utter sh*t. Let's start with the good shall we? Sharlto Copely was good in this film, playing multiple different versions of himself on and off throughout the film. Although we don't get to care about his character all that much I still feel he did a good job playing a bunch of vastly different people. This is a tall task to which he deserves credit for.
Now for the bad. Whoever played the villain did a terrible job. Everything about this guy makes you cringe, like his stupid accent and occasional over the top acting. Not only was the actor bad but the character is even worse. Probaby should cut the guy some slack. Akan is like an annoying boss in a video game who won't have a fair fight and waits until you fight through hordes and hordes of henchmen before he even gets his hands dirty. Due to his telekinetic powers every time Henry gets close to him he simply swats him away, this wouldn't have be so annoying if it only happens once or twice in the film instead of God knows how many times it actually happened. Maybe an annoying boss was what the film was aiming for, I don't know, but (SPOILER ALERT) looking on the bright side, at least this all made his death way more satisfying.
Overall, Hardcore Henry is a brutally fun roller coaster ride of a film. Sure the plot may be generic and you don't care much for the characters, but this film is about its gimmick, its about letting the audience be a part of the film they are watching and in those aims the film has succeeded. So to close, I highly recommend watching Hardcore Henry and if you do choose to watch it, do one thing, have fun with it as this is one bad ass film and Henry is one Bad Motherf*cker.
This movie didn't pop up at all, FPS -movies, they are usually so basic crap (made of games etc. my opinion). This was insane massacre and at some points I got totally lost. That's also very good thing, you actually have to understand what the heck is happening.
Started very well, usual story, memory loss and so. Then everything goes out of hand and you are trying to figure out what the movie is this about.
Anyway, for and FPS movie this was fresh and surprisingly interesting. After the beginning things go like WTF. Not too much shaky cam or so, very entertaining.
Little minus: Many scenes looked like some real-time rendered stuff, badly but I think it was the idea.
Still while this was crazy, innovative production I hope there will be no more likes than this one. Well maybe in future... This is not quite a spoiler but when he runs against vigilantes and tries to find his identity the FPS don't work very well with custom background, actually those hands and all looked seriously CGI but how else make it work?
Last parts of the movie made me little sad because there wasn't enough explanation of things.
Not a masterpiece but worth of watching if you have no idea what to do for the evening.
Worth to watch if you like FPS games and got over those horrible "others", I'll give this crazy movie 8/10 because it's kinda impossible to make movie like this. Darn they messed up in the end... It was like a feeling that there were lot's of directors and writers, movie changed totally.
Great effort! -another one (not actually FPS) was Max Payne -movie. Not very interesting and didn't quite follow the lead of story. (I think it was pretty good but the game vs. movie comparison cannot be made with those two.
..and all you action freaks this is kinda movie you gotta see, I was expecting something like pg.13 movie, there are blood gore and splatter. And this is it :) Hopefully like this creepy one but PLZ no remake movies of this.
8/10 from me.
Hardcore blasts along like a supercharged computer-game shoot-em-up, bursting with sick humor and splatterpunk violence.
