Aug 3, 2017 Lonely Planet guide books on a shelf. When I decided to quit my job and travel the world, I walked into a bookstore and bought Lonely Planet's Southeast Asia on a Shoestring. I was in Thailand and was eager to get started. Buying that guidebook made my impulsive decision seem real. Thumbing through
I got the LP guide “South East Asia on a Shoestring" in a charity shop for ?2, 2002 edition. Does it matter that much if your guide is a few years old? Apart from the differences with regards to cost and money, is there much else in these guides that is different and will have been updated from 2002? I thought
I've never actually used Rough Guides on the road but having read many of them in the planning stages I've never found them set up the way I like it. I guess it's really a personal choice and nothing beats heading to the book store and browsing through them both. I found for South East Asia that the individual country books

I don't think there's a 'better' one, but if I buy a guidebook I tend to go for Rough Guides as they have lots of interesting info in, and as most people use LP you I just bought the lonely planets “southeast Asia on a shoestring" a couple of days ago and thinks it's brilliant! I'm a Lonely Planet person myself
