Book descriptionGiven King Crimsons unexpected reformation and subsequent tour it made sense to finally track down Sid Smiths definitive history of the band from 1968 - 2001. The book follows the band and its ever changing members beginning with the short lived Giles, Giles & Fripp LP, which led to Robert Fripps formation of King Crimson in 1969. The original configuration of the group went through a whirlwind of music, from the bands debut, opening for the Rolling Stones in front of 650,000 people, releasing a classic album, In the Court of the Crimson King, and then imploding during a rigorous tour of the USA, all in 1969 alone. Robert Fripp eventually became the groups one consistent member and guiding light through bursts of creativity from 1972-74 in the company of John Wetton on bass and vocals, Bill Bruford on drums and David Cross on violin - all eventually covered on massive boxed sets. Fripp ended the group and it lay dormant until 1982-84, becoming a fascinating polyrhythmic new-wave group with Adrian Belew on guitar and vocals, Tony Levin on bass and Bruford on drums. They completed three LPs (and several live albums released on Fripps DGMLive label) before once again collapsing. Since then the group has worked intermittently with a wide variety of musicians shifting in and out of the lineup. While the group has never never received the credit they deserved, they remain revered by fans and fellow musicians. Smiths book takes a chronological approach, documenting the albums and tours of each version of the band and providing commentary.
