Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.
The teenager Jarod invites his best friends Travis and Billy-Ray to have a foursome with a thirty-eight year-old woman. While driving to meet the woman, Travis hit a car parked on the road. When they meet the woman, she gives spiked beer to them and they pass out. When the three friends wake up, they find that they are trapped in the fundamentalist Five Points Trinity Church of the infamous Pastor Abin Cooper and that they will be killed. Meanwhile the church is under siege by ATF agents led by Agent Joseph Keenan that have been ordered to destroy the terrorist cell. Will the teenagers be saved by the agents of the law enforcement agency?
Well i notice most people reviewing this movie and the media have gotten used to hyperbole. Boasting words like 'horror' or 'most ambitious yet'. Well that a lie.
This movie is a low budget remake of the Waco incident in Texas. It short and at some point does the trick, but the director couldn't make up his mind if this movie is a comedy or horror.
However, our rotten culture well start it's hyperbole machine make you think this movie is a controversial movie, which it isn't. IT JUST MARKETING - Don't BE FOOLED DUMBIES
See if you want, ignore if you have dignity.
Very rare to I give a film the Awful rating, usually some actor, one scene, even just a sole line can save me from utter disappointment. That, however, is not the case here.
There was nothing redeeming about this film for my taste (and I stress that I speak for only my opinion here. I've not read others reviews. I believe each and every film should have ones full viewing before it's scorned. This film exists, and now it's my time to judge.)
Red State is the kind of film you might, if you have the unfortunate luck, stumble upon the B-movie section of the horror movie genre. I don't mean the potentially good, unrecognized gold that say, a film like The Evil Dead might have been if it'd gone undiscovered. No, this is the kind of film thats cover might catch your eye, but upon reading the back, you set it back down and look for a better selection. And I highly suggest you do just that.
I grew up a Kevin Smith fan. A convenience store clerk who felt like his film Clerks easily depicted a day of my own life and the crazy customers we have to deal with. I followed Kevin along through the rest of his not-so classy tales, standing by my fandom all the while... And then we come to Red State.
Red State was Kevin's attempt at getting away from View Askew, Jay and Silent Bob, and the rest of the empire he's built that he's known and loved for. But in doing so ... He first off, fails to make a successful horror/thriller movie any kind. It's so predictable, I don't even know if spoiler tags are worth while.
There can be a lot to say about those overly-religious cult nuts. But nothing creative or new or even mildly interesting is done here. A wasted very talented cast of characters are as quickly created with not even a hint of personality, as they are then just written right off.
It's every bad horror movie you've ever seen, all compiled into one Kevin-Smith sized portapotty, for him to squat on and frost like a giant cake. (See? I'm even a fan enough of Zack and Miri to quote a scene for a reference... Something I can't do with this film, at any stance.
This is the farthest thing from a Kevin Smith film you'll ever see, which I understand, that's what he was going for... But he didn't managed to shed his baby fat of SilentBob whilst doing this film. He just traded coats with Uwe Boll.
Like I said, I've always been a big supportive of Kevin, and I think him for the View Askew universe and for Randal Graves, the god of slackers ... But your movie making days are over, man. Good times. But, I just heard the last trumpets going off. Please, for us, for your fans, and for God... No more.
It's a charming if conspicuously unfinished film, a half-riotous, half-idiotic send-up of the teen horror genre with a vaguely hip political twist.
Although it was initially suspected that it would be a slasher film, it is actually more like an action thriller. The horror is derived from real life hatred and the violence that people are capable of committing. Also unlike most slasher films, all violence and death in Red State is done with firearms. The movie however does feature numerous horror genre tropes where comparisons can be made between it and The Devil's Rejects and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is not based on an actual story but is inspired but various real life events. The villain is a composite of Fred Phelps, Jim Jones and other leaders of religious cults. The events of the story are also quite similar to the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco, Texas. During the shootout with the ATF and Five Points Church, the congregation's children are hidden in the attic. Later the teenage church member Cheyenne tells them to escape out the back and they are not seen in the film again. During many of Kevin Smith's Q&A appearances for the film he has said that if you listen to the background audio there is the sound of children screaming in the distance soon after the scene when Cheyenne and Jared are killed. Smith said he intentionally chose not to reveal the exact fate of the children. Kevin Smith's first drafted ending for Red State was to have the climactic shootout at the church end when the true apocalypse begins: Trumpet blasts herald from the sky which turns blood red and is filled with angels, one of which impales Pastor Cooper with a flaming sword. Given the film's $5,000 special effects budget this ending was logistically impossible yet elements of it inspired the film's final ending. No. This movie is a stand alone story. It does not contain (ex: Jay and Silent Bob) any characters or overt references to previous Kevin Smith films. a5c7b9f00b
