"I always used to ask my father to read to me before going to sleep when i was a kid. And as soon as i became fairly fluent in english, which i did at about seven or eight, this is what i asked for. Dhalgren. Stranger in a strange land. Dune. The Foundation novels by Aasimov. I would rummage through his bookshelves, looking for anything scifi.
I read Lord of the Rings on my own though, and i would underline the english words that did not make sense to a nine-year old swedish kid, and i would ask about them the next day. “What does ‘thither’ mean? What did he do when he ‘coveted’?"
This curiosity, this wish to learn things is the core of me. It was taken from me for a few years, but i have it back now. And i know that whenever i stop learning, my mind begins to die ever so slowly.
Reading will teach you things, no matter what the subject of the book."
