Jedi Master in hiding Luke Skywalker unwillingly attempts to guide young hopeful Rey in the ways of the force, while Leia, former princess turned general, attempts to lead what is left of the Resistance away from the ruthless tyrannical grip of the First Order.
Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares for battle with the First Order.
If you thought you were FINALLY going to see Luke Skywalker in his full glory as a fully trained, powerful Jedi in the style of the prequels, but with better storytelling, you're in for a severe disappointment.
Luke exists only to elevate Rey, who is already perfect at everything anyway, to his old status in the original films. I love female empowerment, but Rey is just too good... at EVERYTHING... to be taken as being in serious peril. She's a fine actress, but she's immediately the best at everything. She barely needs any force training. Luke beat Darth Vader but was still green and had a lot to learn. Not Rey. She is a better pilot than Han, a better Jedi than Luke and Kylo, etc. She immediately understands all droids and Wookies. If she could sing she'd be the perfect Mary Sue.
JJ Abrams is GREAT at starting stories, but he sucks at finishing them. He and his team knew LOST was ending, and they blew it completely. Same with Fringe. As he said in a TED Talk, he loves mystery boxes, and he loves presenting them, but usually what's revealed to be inside his mystery boxes is very disappointing compared to the buildup. That's NOT good, especially when dealing with a billion dollar franchise like Star Wars. He sets up all kinds of questions... and leaves the answers to someone else. Rian Johnson essentially jettisons most of those questions, blowing off the answers or ignoring them entirely.
And, as stated above, we've longed to see what happened to our heroes from the original films, and, one by one, we've been disappointed. Han Solo LOST The Falcon and is a grumpy old man (Like Ford himself), killed by his own son. Luke, instead of becoming the hero that saves the galaxy, screws it all up and goes into hiding, letting darkness overtake the galaxy again (Sooooo, what as the point of defeating The Empire?). Leia is still around and slowly abdicating her leadership to Poe Dameron, who I like, but that's a bit much. Now that Fisher is dead (RIP), there's nothing left for her to contribute, either. Remember those heroes clapping around the fire on Endor with bright futures ahead of them? Well, forget that. They all ultimately failed and sucked at what they did. All so Supergirl Rey can save the day (one assumes).
Highly disappointing.
This was supposed to be the film that propelled the saga forward into a new direction??? What was wrong with honoring the direction and legends it started?! All this movie does is crucify a heroic character we all loved from childhood, and then leaves us completely unsatisfied with Rey's storyline. Are we honestly expected to believe "anyone" can be a Jedi?? Disney needs to stop controlling this ship! It's not supposed to be part of the "Disney Princess" history. What a shambles!!

Not necessarily. The title is intentionally ambiguous, as Jedi is both singular and plural. As stated in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker is the last Jedi. TLJ Director, Rian Johnson has also confirmed this in interviews and via Twitter. In the first trailer for this film, Luke is heard saying "I only know one truth; it's time for the Jedi to end.", which could mean he refuses to train Rey to become a Jedi but may still train her in the use of the force, which would make Luke the literal last Jedi. However, if Luke trains Rey to be a Jedi, then they would both be the last. Naturally, we can only speculate at this point. It's possible Luke is wracked with guilt over the massacre of the new Jedi Order he created. Twice the Jedi order has failed. It's likely that Luke has realized that the way the Jedi order utilizes only the light side of the Force isn't effective. So perhaps he wants to create a new order with Rey that is more in-between, embracing both the light and the dark (embracing "a larger view of the Force", "not just the dogmatic, narrow view of the Jedi", in a more honest context than those who would use such a sales pitch). Notice the symbolism of the first poster. Luke's face (light side) on one side, Kylo Ren's (dark side) on the other, with Rey in the middle separating the two and her lightsaber going from blue to red. November 3rd, 2017: Re-wrote and tightened up the question "Does the title signify or foreshadow the end of the Jedi Order?" as it rambled on and on about things that didn't really have anything to do with the question. Nor did it provide any answers or theories based on information we know.
