In the 26th century, humanity draws the wrath of a conglomerate of alien races. This "Covenant" is intent on exterminating the human race, which they view as a religious affront. Still an fledgling interstellar race, humanity is constantly pushed back by the overwhelming numbers and furor of the Covenant. The only thing keeping the human race fighting is the fact that the Covenant do not know the location of Earth. Instead all operations are carried out from the planet Reach. Ships in danger of capture are required to self-destruct or make "blind" hyperspace jumps away from Earth. The humans do have a few tricks up their sleeves, though. The best is the SPARTAN-II program, designed to forge elite soldiers through genetic modification. A plan is launched to use the SPARTAN-II soldiers to infiltrate a Covenant ship and discover the location of the alien homeworld. But the plan fails, and the SPARTAN-II soldiers return to Reach for cybernetic modification to attempt the plan again. But the Covenant are just as devious, and launch a surprise attack on Reach, destroying many of the human fleet ships. Only the Pillar of Autumn manages to escape, making a blind jump away from Earth in the hope that the Covenant will follow and not search Reach for the location of Earth. The plan works, but the Covenant make it to the jump point before the Pillar of Autumn, and launch another attack. In desperation, Captain Keyes orders the "Hushed Coffin" unsealed, and the last surviving SPARTAN-II soldier, known only by his rank of Master Chief, is awakened from cryogenic stasis. His orders are to protect the Pillar of Autumn's AI construct, Cortana, from capture, so that the Covenant can't retrieve Earth's location from it. The Pillar of Autumn is abandoned, and the Master Chief and the surviving crew members find themselves stranded on an artificial ringworld, Halo. Faced with superior numbers and a seemingly inexhaustible alien fleet, the survivors must make their final stand on this ancient alien world. But Halo hides a secret, The Flood, a weapon so powerful it could destroy the galaxy. Can the Master Chief overcome impossible odds and stop both the Covenant and the Flood? Humanity's fate rests in the hands of one genetically modified cybernetic soldier.
Mankind is being destroyed by a conglomerate of alien races all under the flag of the Covenant. A human spaceship is under attack and has no chance to survive, and now the only hope for mankind is for the Spartan-II forged Master Chief to make sure the Covenant do not get a hold of the ship's AI, and thus discovering the location of Earth. But the survivors of the ship are stranded on a strange alien planet called Halo, and everything is stacked against them. It becomes a desperate battle as the brave crew, lead by the Master Chief and the AI Cortana, try to survive the Covenant's assault.
I waited 2 years for this game to come out and needless to say it was more than worth it.
First of all the graphics and visuals in general are just amazing, and the Storyline is only rivaled by the great Half-Life and myth series(also from bungie studios)
The basic storyline is you are a Special forces "cyborg" that is in the human space naval forces. when the largest human colony comes under attack by the covenant. Your ship flee's to a random part of space in order to draw the alien forces away. however you and your shipmates stumble across a massive ringworld and a massive alien force that is guarding it. you become stranded on the ring and must fight your way through it in order to gain control of the highly important planet.
The games storyline is so intense at times that you forget its only a game. however between the intellegent covenant and the native inhabitants of the ringworld you will find it more than challenging enough.
Overall i give this game a 9 out of 10
After missing out on this game's first release, I've finally got the chance to play this game for the first time. Halo is one hell of a shooter and it reinvigorates the genre in so many ways. Firstly, the story is well told and captivating with humanity's struggle against an alien enemy hell-bent on destroying the human race. Master Chief, the hero of the story is one of the coolest looking characters in video game history along with his spunky A.I. companion, Cortana. The voice acting is first rate, giving one of the most compelling and convincing performances to date and the moment I heard this side of the virtual spectrum. But that's not all. Adding to the atmosphere of the game is the balls-to-the-wall blistering action, suspense coupled with movie-quality cut-scenes with a masterful and epic soundtrack composed by Martin O'Donnell, one the most beautiful compositions ever for a video game. And it's got great multi-player to boot and it's execution is very innovative throughout.
Speaking of action, the best parts of the game are the action sequences. Taking on groups alien soldiers with just a limited selection of weapons, to blowing a Banshee out of the sky with a rocket launcher is immensely satisfying. The action is SO GOOD I felt like I was in an Arnold Schwarzenegger film!!! The fact that you can only carry two weapons makes for some pretty interesting tactical strategic thinking. And I gotta admit, I was certainly enthralled with this aspect of the game.
My only real complaints is that it should've been a little longer and the level design more varied and some of the vehicles, namely the Warthog are hard to control. But since this is an old Xbox game, it's easy to overlook these gripes.
As someone who likes action games with a Sci-Fi setting, I currently consider myself a Halo fan. It wasn't just the story, characters, action that drawn me to this game, but the freedom of strategy and tactical decision making that won me over. After I beat it (which took me a while to do on Legendary) I felt a real sense of accomplishment. Not too many games of this type have that kind of spark that Halo has and for that, I'm glad that I bought it and since I'm new to the franchise, I'll be hunting down Halo 2 and 3.
Master Chief rocks!!!
Halo: Combat Evolved takes place in the twenty-sixth century. Reach is a space colony where Spartan-II soldiers are recalled to, to prepare for a mission to discover the Covenant's home world. Two days before the mission was to begin, Covenant forces attack Reach and destroy the colony. However, the starship Pillar of Autumn survives the attack and initiates a hyperspace jump to lure the enemy away from Earth. Yes. After the credits end, the Monitor can be seen zooming through space, having survived Halo's destruction. a5c7b9f00b
