To win a bet, an eccentric British inventor beside his Chinese valet and an aspiring French artist, embarks on a trip full of adventures and dangers around the world in exactly 80 days.
Set in 1890, the story focuses on Passepartout, a Chinese thief who steals a valuable jade Buddha and then seeks refuge in the traveling companionship of an eccentric London inventor and adventurer, Phileas Fogg, who has taken on a bet with members of his gentlemen's club that he can make it around the world in a mere 80 days, using a variety of means of transportation, like boats, trains, balloons, elephants, etc. Along the way, Passepartout uses his amazing martial arts abilities to defend Fogg from the many dangers they face.. One major threat to their adventure is a detective that's following them. Why? Just as Fogg and Passeportout left London, a major bank was robbed, with Fogg suspected of using the "around the world" trip as an excuse to escape.. Their path from London and back includes stops in Paris, Turkey, India, China and USA.
Around the World is remade once more with more of a comedy take than before. Jackie Chan is more the focus as the valet but here a man from China trying to return a stolen Buddha.
Steve Coogan is a wacky inventor and would be adventurer, Phileas Fogg, who takes up a challenge to voyage around the world from Jim Broadbent.
Chan is chased by both police and Chinese assassins and uses Fogg to get back to China. This allows Chan to use his slapstick acrobatics and comedy kung fu.
Coogan is the more erudite one, intelligent almost an Henry Higgins type. Emotionally repressed as we see when a young French painter (Monique) joins them and be the eventual romantic interest for Coogan.
The film has a host of star cameo appearances such as John Cleese, Richard Branson, The Wilson brothers and Arnie the Governor.
The film is charming enough with broad laughs and slapstick. Its disposable fun but also easily forgettable.
The film quite quickly gives you a hint that it isn't much based the Jules Verne books. Still, this could be accepted if the film was well-done, either as a comedy or as a adventure film.
It's neither. While in the book (and the legendary film with David Niven) Phileas Fogg is the leading character and a prototype English gentleman, this film sees him as a crazy inventor with no contact with the real world, and a brain driving at half speed. The real hero of this film is Passepartout, who is involved with high Chinese politics. As it wouldn't have been a Chan-movie without Chan moves, the film has long and fairly boring bits of action as well (Chan's character, obviously, is a super-ninja). As Fogg at one point is forced to manage on his own, he and we learn that he would be lost without his followers, PasseparChan and Monique (who, obviously, discovered every post-impressionist painting technique and style on her own in 1870). In reality Passepartout is the hero (no surprise there) and Monique is the good sidekick (Fogg is the annoying one). As neither Chan nor Cecile de France delivers their best, the film is at best average, thanks to some good cameos (most noteworthy Arnold Schwarzenegger). The drive is gone when the trio reach USA, and from there on it's more embarrassing than good. The film is completely without strong characters, but some (Fogg, Fixx...) are particularly weak.
If this film changed title, we ignored the 80 days bet and removed Fogg (or at least Coogan) it could be a fair film with an OK story. As of now, it simply isn't worth wasting 2 hours, especially if you, like me, prefer that historical films are at least remotely accurate.
With the exception of one masterfully choreographed - and improbably bloodless - martial-arts gang fight, the new version of Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days is one of the lamest remakes of a classic film I've ever seen.
No. For the most part this is a film that draws loose inspiration from the Verne novel. A more faithful adaptation was made in 1956.
To name a few specific and obvious changes from the novel:
-In the film, Phileas Fog is an eccentric inventer who takes a bet for a position of auhority. In the book he was a recluse who spent most of his time playing cards and the bet was simply a sum of money.
-Passpartout in the book was much more open with Fog. He was being honest when he said he was French, and there was no sub-plot about him taking advantage of Fog to achieve a hidden agenda. Also in the film he is responsible for the bank robbery, despite having nothing to do with it in the book.
-While the bank robbery did happen in the book, it is given a larger role and serves as motivation for the characters. Lord Kelvin also pins it on Fog as an excuse to keep him from winning the bet. In the book, the robbery happened of-screen and had nothing to do the main characters. Inspector Fix only mistook Fog for the robber because his appearance matched the description he had been given of the actual criminal.
-In the film, Inspector Fix is depicted as a dim-witted officer who is manipulated by Kelvin. In the book, he was much more reasonable, having mistaken Fog for the robber based on his appearance matching the description. He also eventually helps Fog and releases him when he realizes his mistake.
-The love interest in the book was an Indian princess, not a French artist. a5c7b9f00b
