3 May 2011 edit 3012-05-07: While this post was originally written for the Nikon D5100, all of these tips also apply to the D5200. So while I work on an updated Nikon D5200 Tips and Tricks post, start out by making use of these tips. And of course, they all still apply to the D5100. nikon d5100 autofocus af system use
Use the same technique as when selecting a point during autofocusing: Looking through the viewfinder, press the Multi Selector on your D3100, D5100, or D7000 right, left, up, or down until the point you want to use flashes red. Frame the shot so that your subject is under your selected focus point.
To use this method, make sure you are in AF-S mode. Turn on the audible beep for confirmation that your subject is in focus. Especially when shooting in low light, turn on the Focus Assist Lamp. If manually focusing use Rangefinder and check results at 100% playback zoom.
