Use the same technique as when selecting a point during autofocusing: Looking through the viewfinder, press the Multi Selector on your D3100, D5100, or D7000 right, left, up, or down until the point you want to use flashes red. Frame the shot so that your subject is under your selected focus point.
To use this method, make sure you are in AF-S mode. Turn on the audible beep for confirmation that your subject is in focus. Especially when shooting in low light, turn on the Focus Assist Lamp. If manually focusing use Rangefinder and check results at 100% playback zoom.
