Book descriptiondat boek over Coltrane en de jazzrevolutie van de 60s blijkt toch een boeiend geval te zijn. De manier waarop Kofsky de door blanke jazzmuzikanten gedomineerde stromingen minimaliseert is provocerend, maar ook te eenzijdig. Het mag misschien wel hard te maken zijn dat de meer gereserveerde cool jazz (vroege Miles Davis, Konitz, Baker, etc) en de experimenten van Brubeck & Co. meer aansluiten bij op de Europese traditie gestoelde impulsen en genres, maar gaan bewijzen dat de muziek geen (of amper) blijvende waarde heeft lijkt nogal onnozel. De voorkeur voor een meer “negroïde” jazz, minder Europees georiënteerd en minder begaan met vormelijke conventies, zoals die de kop opstak rond het midden van de jaren vijftig en zou leiden tot de hard-bop (en daarna de avant-garde) die enkele jaren dominant zou zijn, werd wel eerder duidelijk gemaakt, maar zelden was de aanval op het establishment (vooral dan toonaangevende publicatie Down Beat en Leonard Feather in het bijzonder) zo bruut. Het lijkt dan ook of Kofsky een vete heeft omgevormd tot een persoonlijke kruistocht, wat ook blijkt uit zijn tendentieuze interview (althans zijn vragen) met Coltrane.Een beetje vreemd toch wel, dat een boek dat geschreven is vanuit socialistisch-politieke hoek, ook nog eens John Coltrane centraal stelt. De talloze verwijzingen naar politiek-geïnspireerde muzikant Archie Shepp zijn te begrijpen (handig!), maar daardoor worden diens verwezenlijkingen wel wat grootser voorgesteld dan ze waren, veronderstel ik. Wel boeiend: een hoofdstuk dat volledig gewijd is aan de invloed van Coltrane op Albert Ayler, vooral aan de hand van “Chasin’ The Trane” van die eerste, en enkele rake opmerkingen over tijdsgenoten (o.m. dat de titels van enkele Ornette Coleman-albums - Tomorrow Is The Question, The Shape Of Jazz To Come, Change Of The Century - sterke hyperbolen zijn, en amper te rechtvaardigen in het licht van andere albums en revoluties).John Coltrane & the Jazz Revolution of the 1960s by Frank Kofsky find read ipad flibusta pdf
