Based on the IDW Comic, Wynonna Earp follows Wyatt Earp's great great-granddaughter as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she's the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.
I forced myself to watch LOST GIRL. For about 1 season. If you liked Lost Girl then you will like this show. Nothing wrong with that. However, this is the exact same concept: brooding female lead, spunky younger sidekick, dry attempt at girl on girl romance, flirty partner, and just a bunch of things that make no sense.
There is no chemistry, no charisma, no cohesive plot. I made myself watch 5 episodes because quite honestly, I like the "Doc Holliday" character and want to see what his deal is. But five episodes was just too much. Ugh. The rules are stated but never followed. The male "partner" (much like Dyson) acts like a bossy, know it all who spends most of the time with an "i told you so" attitude, trying to keep our loose-cannon heroine in line. At least lost girl was something new. But damn, this show sucks. :(
I'll start with the two enjoyable things I took from this show: the soundtrack (great choice of songs so far, matching the mood and setting) and Tim Rozon's performance (a bit over the top, but enjoyable nonetheless).
Now, where to begin with the rest. I am writing this midway through the 7th episode, as I consider it safe to assume that if the show hasn't saved itself by now, it may not do it at all.
Disclaimer: this may come out as prejudiced or maybe misogynistic, but the TV world did not need a female version of Wyatt Earp (nor did it need one of Van Helsing, which is arguably a bit more watchable than this), especially not one as poorly portrayed as this one.
I will only say this once, and you're free to disagree: this show was built on an over-hyperbolization of "girl power". It's riddled with unnecessary moments of damsels in distress miraculously escaping death, horrible male casting (except for Doc), random "oh, a guy telling me what to do" remarks and the list goes on. The show could have been great, had they not tried to make it so socially acceptable and tortured by fake empowerment.
Now that's out of the way, the acting in itself is bad. Dominique Provost-Chalkley is by far either the worst actress or just very poorly cast. This is not a teen high- school drama and her performance has been, so far, cringe worthy at best. The rest of the cast just seem to be brought down by poor writing mostly.
Every little subplot seems to end abruptly and sometimes inexplicably, to the extent of predictability. 3 episodes in and you'll catch on to most gimmicks, bad jokes and all the rest.
Visual effects are also just as poor, but that seems to be a common occurrence with Syfy shows. It's a shame, but maybe season 2 will do better.
Overall, it's like a very, very bad version of Supernatural recast with poorly built characters and dialogue. It really is a shame, because it could've made for a great show, probably with more effort and a tad more budget. I hope by the end of the season I will be proved wrong, but that seems very unlikely.
