Old-school U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in the poor, rural coal mining towns in eastern Kentucky.
U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a modern day nineteenth century-style lawman, enforcing his brand of justice in a way that puts a target on his back with criminals, and places him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service. That conflict results in a reassignment for Givens to the U.S. District covering the town where he grew up. He is an anachronism, a tough, soft-spoken gentleman who finds his quarry fascinating, but never gives an inch. Dig under his placid skin and you'll find an angry man who grew up hard in rural Kentucky, with an outlaw father, who knows a lot more about who he doesn't want to be than who he really is.
Usually just before Raylon (sometimes referred to as "Marshall Stiffie" in the mainstream reviews) shoots someone, he will say something so cool that it practically frosts the air, like, "there are two ways we can do this, the easy way, and the hard way ..." - so out of respect for this remarkable series, I will say that there are two ways to review this production. The easy way is simply to point out that, from the pilot episode to the present, it is, and always has been, pitch perfect. Olyphant, one of the most charismatic actors of the day (heck, he has done entire movies bald, and without showing any emotion, and HE IS STILL COOL) had been bouncing around Hollywood for a spell, but never really found his groove until this. The pedigree is awesome, short story by Elmore Leonard. The supporting cast is awesome, Groggins steals every scene that is otherwise not nailed down, he could make the Lord's Prayer sound menacing, but believe it or not there have been other supporting actors just as good in the earlier episodes. The balance between action and romance is as good as it gets, and it seems that every other female cast here is either beautiful or available or deadly (and often all three at once!) -- and to sum up the "easy" review, this series is yet one more example of how TV product in the last few years has come to surpass Hollywood's larger efforts (a theme I like to mention in my reviews BECAUSE IT IS TRUE).
As for the hard way, the trickier review, you need to know that by the time Graham Yost was in high school he knew more about how to entertain people in this medium than most of us have forgotten, all courtesy of his father, a man who loved movies, especially good ones. Yost exploded onto the scene with SPEED -- still iconic even today -- but this series proves he is no one-hit-wonder. Every aspect of the production bespeaks a careful eye, even the opening titles and the theme song. Astounding. It does not get any better than this.
I'm up to episode ten. What happened to the writing after seasons one through four? Did E. Leonard's death impact the quality? Season five consists of a farrago of inexplicable activities. Art is suddenly more angry at Raylan for no discernible reason and, early on punches Raylan! Why? No answer. Eva's incarceration goes on and on and on, providing, apparently, an easy partial plot device for writers. The Crowe family remains nuts with sister Crowe, supposedly a lawyer going along "for family" while her son enjoys frequent mental abuse and exposure to the Crowe insanity. Nothing like a loving mom. It is impossible to understand why Eva remains in danger, or even in prison, given Boyd's power to affect lives. What's the motivation behind the nurse/guard's actions? So much occurs without background/explanation. Characters seem to be drawing cards at random to determine their next lines/moves. Winn Duffy flutters around the edges as do his buddies in Detroit, essentially doing nothing except filling plot time. Season five appears to be the Keystone Kops version of Justified. Too bad. We were spoiled by seasons one through four.
