An animated television show that focuses on a sixteen-year-old Peter Parker, and the origins of Spider-Man.
Orphaned schoolboy Peter Parker lost even his uncle, leaving him with old, semi-helpless aunt May. Trough a messed-up experiment with spider DNA, he acquires super-powers. But he only uses them when masked in a flashy costume as Spider-man, a mysterious dashing hero who defeats all crooks. As Peter, his life is far humbler, moonlighting as photographer for the Bugle.
Spider-man is one of the most popular comic book character's ever created and is easily Marvel's most popular superhero. Spider-man has been made into a number of television series, from the 60s cartoon, the 70s live-action show and cartoons in the 80s, 90s and in 2003. Spider-man has also been Marvel's most successful film series, making over a Billion Dollars worldwide.
In recent time they has been a re-birth of some of Marvel's most popular superheroes in cartoon form, such as Wolverine and the X-Men, trying to match the heyday in the 90s.
This version of Spider-man takes him closer to his original roots, set with Peter Parker as a intelligence high-school kid who just gained his powers to be the famous crime-fighter. He had been fighting low-level criminals, disrupting the operations of crimes lords such as Tombstone. New supervillains are born, from the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, The Vulture, Venom, the Rhino and the Sandman. As well as fighting crime, Peter Parker has to tackle a number of personal issues, Aunt May's money and health problems, Harry Osborn's addiction to a experimental chemical, the love triangle between Gwen Stacy, Mary-Jane Watson and Liz Allen, and his declining friendship with Eddie Brock.
This series is the first time that Peter Parker is shown as a teenager like he was in the original comics, and give villains like Electro and the Sandman a more prominent role. They are some story arcs like Symobite Spider-suit, the Birth of Venom, the gang wars between Tombstone and Doctor Octopus and the rise of the Green Goblin as well as Peter's personal life. Gwen Stacy is also finally given a major role. Television series have often shyed away from showing her despite being Peter's first true love, mainly because she dies.
There are fine characters in the show, from the villains to the normal people. Tombstone and the Sandman show their good side.
The writing is good, with some good story lines, and some jokes for the audience. It tries to appeal to young and old.
There are some problems. The character designs are weak, with some characters like Peter Parker and Flash Thompson look too simple and silly, with a lack of facial features. Doctor Octopus also looks terrible in the show, the worst version available. It seems it's trying to aim for the younger audience. But on the other side of the coin the animation for fights are well down and I do like the design for Gwen Stacy, especially with her geeky look. Other problems are that Tombstone is obliviously a substitute for the Kingpin who was not allowed to be used in the show. I did not like that the programmed made out that Peter and Eddie Brock used to be friends and that he was just an 18-year-old undergrad and lab assistant, not a journalist. I also thought it was pointless turning Liz Allen's ethnicity from Caucasian to Pureto Rician, well, they should have changed her name first to be more fitting.
The series is pretty good, but it needs to improve it's animation style.
It really is a shame we only got two seasons. Every episode left me wanting to see more, because all the good stuff was in it: engaging voice actors, well developed versions of the characters, great action scenes etc.
I always say that a good story triumphs visuals, but the animation in the 1994 series was so much more dynamic. The style of Saturday morning cartoon series is a downgrade, but that is the only issue I have with this rendition of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Watch it. You won't regret it.

In episode 13, Final Curtain, it is revealed that Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin. Although Spider-Man suspected him at first, he cleverly escaped this suspicion by staging his son Harry as the Green Goblin.
